If you don't roleplay to prep for an interview, here's why you should: I prepped a client for a big interview recently. The company wanted her. But the salary and role weren’t where she wanted to be. We roleplayed the conversation over and over. We covered every possible response. Every possible push back. She KILLED IT. Before the roleplays, she wasn't confident. She interviewed at 10:00 AM. By 10:30 AM, she had received an offer for 220k—30k more than she'd initially requested. The company called her recruiter immediately after the interview. They didn't waste any time and wanted her on board. No delays, no games. The recruiter called her right away, and she accepted the offer. When there is a good fit, there's no need to waste time. Being layed off 9 days before a milestone birthday, took me by surprise but I understand the bottom line. These past 5 months have really humbled me as a past (and hopefully future) recruiter. Communication, empathy, understanding the business and time management are huge from a candidate’s perspective. I’ve been ghosted by directors/ hiring managers after final interviews. I’ve been told my questions during an interview were the wrong questions to ask (what do you look for in a candidate, what is the interview process). I’ve been told I’m not qualified to learn how to do the job. I now know what candidates go through when they are excited to join a team and plan their future with a company and never hear anything back. I now know what candidates feel when they are passively engaged just to go through the motions. I now know how I could have made a candidate feel during my time. A candidates experience is just as important as a companies search. Many lessons learned that I hope to one day rectify. Be sure whether they are hired or not they walk away feeling empowered to keep trying.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. It's unfortunate that questions about managing work with childcare responsibilities are commonly asked during interviews ( sometimes on a negative tone). It's essential for interviewers to approach these topics with sensitivity and recognize the diverse experiences and challenges that candidates may face. It's important for interviewers to focus on the qualifications and skills related to the job rather than making assumptions about ability to balance work and family life.

Now more than ever, it's crucial for hiring managers, HR leaders, and our peers to value authenticity. We're all multifaceted individuals beyond our professional roles. Balancing work with personal commitments is a reality for many of us. Each of us carries our challenges, often unseen by others.
