Something from left field: last night I attended a talk at the opera house with Jennifer Doudna (Nobel Prize winning scientist) who pioneered CRISPR gene editing. This is not my area of expertise, and I found it completely fascinating - the possibilities are incredible, from the eradication of disease, to helping white cells attack tumors, to solving climate change (by gene editing cows). Trials are underway for it to solve blood diseases, but at fairly high cost per-treatment. What are the ethical implications? Super-soldiers? Unintended consequences? A genetic underclass who can't afford gene editing? I think the positives likely outweigh the negatives, and exciting times ahead!

AI chatbots can be incredibly useful when done well - providing better, faster, more empathetic customer service. This from Meta... is not one of those chatbots. On the bright side, with my new revenue agreement in place with Meta, I'm off to go buy an F1 team, and join the space race with Musk and Bezos! More seriously, a few key takeaways: 1. Test thoroughly before rolling out AI interactions like this at scale. 2. Ensure you have a regular review process to assess the quality of automated interactions.

Stanford has released their annual AI Index report for 2024, including top 10 takeaways: "Over the last year, the proportion of those who think AI will dramatically affect their lives in the next three to five years has increased... to 66%." "52% express nervousness toward AI products and services... a 13% rise from 2022." I think some nervousness makes sense (people don't like change), but the benefits will overcome the fear over time. Top 10 Takeaways 1. AI beats humans on some tasks, but not on all. 2. Industry continues to dominate frontier AI research. 3. Frontier models get way more expensive. 4. The United States leads China, the EU, and the U.K. as the leading source of top AI models. 5. Robust and standardized evaluations for LLM responsibility are seriously lacking. 6. Generative AI investment skyrockets. 7. The data is in: AI makes workers more productive and leads to higher quality work. 8. Scientific progress accelerates even further, thanks to AI. 9. The number of AI regulations in the United States sharply increases. 10. People across the globe are more cognizant of AI’s potential impact—and more nervous. My key takeaways from "The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership" book: We talk, listen and act in any moment from either: >> Above the line: Ownership, Accountability, Responsibility. An open, curious, creative state of mind.  OR >> Below the line: Blame, Excuses, Denial. A closed, defensive, fearful state of mind. All leaders drift below the line, the question is how quickly we shift back. Commitments:  1. I commit to taking full responsibility for the circumstances of my life and for my physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being. 2. I commit to helping others take full responsibility for theirs. Beware 'victim', 'villain' or 'hero' behaviors (people taking more or less than 100% responsibility) which leads to burnout/blame/prevents others from taking full responsibility for their performance. Helpful questions to ask when retro-ing a situation/problem:  - From the past this reminds me of... - I keep this situation going by.... - What I get from keeping this issue going is....  - The life long pattern I'm noticing is...  - How can I play with this situation? - I can demonstrate 100percent responsibility concerning this issue by.... #leadership #accountability
