Interesting facts about tomorrow's presidential debate: • Biden won the coin toss and chose to stand on the audience's right side because humans subconsciously look that way more. • there will not be a live audience. • neither candidate is allowed to bring notes - but they will be given pen and paper to take notes. • each candidate only has 2 minutes to speak until their mic is muted. • the topics of questions have not been released yet. • there will be commercial breaks but each candidate is not allowed to talk to their campaign team during them. • Trump will have the closing argument. • there will probably be a lot of pointing. After the debate I will release an analysis. Be sure to keep an eye out for it.

Here is why finding information and trusting the media is such a challenge these days. Especially during a contentious election season that has the potential to significantly divide the country and create a social rift that only hurts us as a country and as individuals in our personal and professional relationships. This piece by the NYT is a perfect example of how emotionally charged language and obvious bias makes it hard for people from an opposing view to be open to trust the information in the article. https://lnkd.in/gDFPzJ9W When an article starts off negatively portraying a candidate, using emotionally charged language, whatever information follows will almost always be read with doubt. We need to do better. National trust in the media is at an all time low and articles like this one are great examples as to why that continues to happen. And it’s true of media outlets on all sides of the aisle. When will objective journalism and press become the norm instead of the hidden fringe? Yes, it’s an opinion piece…but it is delivered as factual data.

My training and experience as a journalist, and the education I was fortunate enough to receive, taught me to be open-minded and respectful of differing political beliefs and ideologies. And they taught me to realize that no political movement holds a monopoly on the truth and righteousness, that they and we all are flawed and prone to missteps and mistakes along the path of life, and the complex political and social challenges we face are more often colored in shades of gray than black and white. Hopefully, we all learn from our mistakes, learn to see problems from different perspectives, and become better, more kind and just people in the process. But that’s not what the MAGA and Trump political movement have ever been about. They’ve been about doing whatever they deem necessary, even overthrowing democracy itself, to seize and hold onto power for power’s sake, because they’ve been blinded by their own hate-filled grievances and warped views of reality. They don’t believe in respecting differing viewpoints, or respecting facts that lead to different outcomes and conclusions than they want; they only care about demonizing their opponents, dehumanizing them regardless of the harm it causes, and even stripping them of their basic rights if that’s what it takes to seize power. And the fact is millions of my fellow citizens just don’t care. They didn’t care in the years leading up to Jan. 6; they didn’t care on Jan. 6 itself; and they don’t care today.

202401 JAN - The Year of the Vote PART 2 of 2 This is a monthly reflection as we approach another Presidential Election in November of 2024. For my lifetime, until the last decade, the vote was a celebration of the people of the United States and sometimes played out like a college playoff with multiple characters to capture our fancy. This election is different. This vote is much more somber. This vote could end what we know as Democracy. I the People I am one vote, and I will do my part.  ·      I will only vote for a Republican if they stand up to the horrendous calamity caused by the current batch of representatives. Sadly, there are very few to vote for, and when in doubt, I will vote Democratic. o  Here is a question to ask the current batch of Republican primary candidates. If Trump picks them for the VP spot, would they accept? That will thin the herd and allow you to find a Republican worth voting for. ·      I will resist falling for a third-party option as the very foundation of our republic is in the balance. A third-party choice could have the effect of dividing the democratic base and allowing the twice impeached, four-time indicted, soon-to-be convicted former president to regain his position as president. ·      I will carry this choice down to the local government, where gerrymandering has its roots, and begin to remove the cancer cells that put bigotry and hate before understanding and consensus. ·      I will vote, and my vote will be heard.
