'When we approach our gatherings, our organisations, and our decision-making spaces through the lens of visibility, we see whose voice is valued, whose isn’t, and who is missing. When we dig into who isn’t seen or who isn’t being heard, we reveal a map of systemic inequality.  By committing to certain visibility principles, a path of justice begins to reveal itself. Principles like:  - Valuing the perspectives of those with lived experiences in each subject area,  - Ensuring that such people are involved in discussions and decision-making about that subject matter, - Asking who is not in the decision-making space and why, - Committing to devising creative solutions to encourage participation (where necessary),  - Agreeing not to make decisions on behalf of those affected unless they are in the room, and - When they are there, noticing who gets to speak and whose voices are valued in decision-making spaces.' As one of the co-founders of letstalkroundtable.com and other projects, I am deeply committed to fostering a platform that not only encourages but necessitates meaningful dialogue among all members of our community. Our mission is to transform the dynamics between leadership and advocacy, creating a space where real conversations can lead to real change. At Let’s Talk Roundtable, we believe that leadership should function hand-in-hand with advocacy. By engaging leaders from various sectors—including community advocates, law enforcement, and local government—we aim to create a holistic dialogue that respects and incorporates diverse perspectives. This approach is not just about sharing ideas; it’s about actively listening and responding to the concerns that affect our community. Our discussions focus on pressing systemic issues, such as the challenges of racial and xenophobic behavior within institutions. These are not easy conversations, but they are necessary. By bringing these issues to the forefront in a constructive manner, we can begin to unravel the complexities of these problems and work toward comprehensive solutions. Leadership, in the context of Let’s Talk Roundtable, goes beyond traditional roles. It is about facilitating conversations that might otherwise be avoided and acting as a bridge between divided communities. Our platform ensures that all voices are not only heard but are integral to the policymaking process. This collaborative approach enhances transparency and builds trust, which are essential for effective governance and community relations. As we continue to build and grow Let’s Talk Roundtable, I am reminded daily of the power of conversation. It is through our discussions that we uncover the shared values that bind us, despite our differences. It is here, in the nexus of leadership and advocacy, that we find the path forward—a path paved with respect, understanding, and a commitment to action. HARMONY WEEK? At the heart of Harmony Week being ineffective, is the fact that the name was changed in order to avoid understanding about the true meaning of the week/day. How do we find harmony in the vacuum of ignorance that we’ve created? Added to this is the Australian defining of racism, which only fouces on overt and covert behaviors and manifestations and not systemic structures that are hardwired into our Australian world and ways of knowing ourselves. The unsaid default of being Australian, as being white anglo/celtic and absolute refusal to incorporate Aboriginality into what it means to truly be Australian and assume an Australian identity. Harmony week is essentially a celebration of Australian racial denialism masked as multiculturalism. Coming to terms with who we really are, during week’s such as this, might be a good place to start…

Innovation is not about technology, it's about risk. In today's political climate, I can think of few risks more imposing than addressing long-standing inequalities in our society. How do you reform government programs designed to build our national identity when the divisions in our society exist within your own department as well as in the society you serve? By building trust. Over and over again, everytime it is challenged. The innovators at Canadian Heritage built a high-trust team to conduct an EDI review of the programs we use to tell our national story. It was the only way they could navigate the rapids of social, cultural and ideological divisions that increasingly dominate national conversations. Hats off to the EDI Review Core team and Innovation Lab for making it down river - and showing others how it's done.

🌍 CALL TO ALLIES: Building an Inclusive Society - Embracing the Philosophy of 'Leave No One Behind' 🌍 In our global push towards progress, it's crucial that we champion the ethos of 'leave no one behind' to ensure that no group, no matter how marginalized, is forgotten as we advance. This commitment not only reflects our moral duty but also strengthens our social fabric, enabling us as a community and a state to flourish. Martha Nussbaum's insights on human capabilities remind us that true development can only be achieved when everyone has the freedom to develop their potential. Her advocacy for embracing our vulnerability and interdependence resonates deeply in today's world, where equity and empathy must be at the heart of all societal advancement. Robert Putnam's research on social capital further underscores this point, showing how connected and cooperative communities lead to higher levels of civic engagement and better outcomes for all citizens. His work illustrates that by fostering trust and reciprocity, we can repair and reinforce our social networks.
