Having played soccer for the greatest university in the world - aka Georgetown University - and been a lifelong fan of the US Women’s National Team, I’m a firm believer that leaders can take many important lessons and experiences from the soccer field (and any sports field/court/arena for that matter). That’s why I couldn’t have been more energized to sit down with my friend and U.S. Soccer Federation President Cindy Parlow Cone recently to talk about her unexpected career journey, how she leads with humility to make decisions, what her process is for building a team, as well as how her teams are expanding access, advancing inclusion, and fostering belonging across the sport. ⚽ This clip is one of my favorite topics we discussed: the “scoreboard” to measure leadership success. For some, success is as simple as the performance of the most visible part of a team or organization – that might mean in Cindy’s case: national soccer team victories, or me at Deloitte Consulting: our consulting business’s growth rate. But success needs to be measured much more broadly; it’s about culture, it’s about broader societal impact, it’s about things you can measure and things you can’t. Hear how Cindy measures success across US Soccer’s many priorities and encourages people around her to think about success wholistically. How do you define success and what are some ways you track it? #Deloitte #USWNT #Leadership #Success
As a non-profit, US Soccer defines success by manifesting its mission (and not by profit earned). As a member organization of the USOPC, they must juggle many purposes and navigate needs of many stakeholders. Leading in this context is a very complex task. Organizational capacity is how companies set and achieve goals, and it’s measured across multiple domains…financial, collaboration, HR, and more. Congrats 🎉 to Cindy for navigating this tightrope.
Absolutely..Success is not only measured based upon Data points(I.e :win , % of growth&target)..it’s mainly how cultural values we cultivate for the betterment of team , society and individual through equal opportunity, equality and support in tough times.
I didn't know you played at Georgetown, Dan. Great post though I think there needs to be much more scrutiny on which sponsors are signed to meet the desired culture and values of any sports program and that just isn't happening.
Thanks for this, had no idea U.S. Soccer included 27 teams. Love that a key measure of success is equity for all kids given how expensive it is to participate in soccer at a high level.
Dan Helfrich Would love to see you in Sydney for the semi and final match of the Women's World Cup...you know I will be donning my USA Jersey!
Great to see the continued support of US Womens National Team Soccer and one of our hometown favorites Cindy Parlow Cone! #Soccerchangeslives!
Yes … greatest university for sure!
Very insightful clip, thanks for sharing Dan Helfrich
