Building further on last year's publications concluding a correlation between the pulmonary arterial and veinous volume and mortality in COPD, this abstract presented recently at #ATS2024 shows more evidence on pulmonary vasculature abnormalities in COPD patients. The study used LungQ AVX to conclude the presence of pulmonary vascular abnormalities in all COPD GOLD stages, with more prevalence in higher disease severity and smokers with COPD. This correlation could potentially be of great relevance for clinical management. As a routine check of pulmonary vascular alterations, for example, it could allow for a better monitoring of the disease progression for all COPD severities, as well as for developing effective treatments. Rare Disease Day is celebrated on the last day of February since it is regarded as the rarest day of the year. The aim of this global observance is to raise awareness and advocate for approximately 286-446 million people worldwide living with rare conditions, as well as their families and caregivers, whose suffering extends to them.    A disease is deemed rare when it affects fewer than one in 2000 people, according to EURORDIS. The World Health Organization's ICD-11 recognizes approximately 5500 rare diseases worldwide. However, the intricate nature of rare diseases and their low prevalence complicates their differentiation from more common disorders. A recent study published by AstraZeneca forecasts a significant rise in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) by 2032. The study projects that up to 16.5% of the population in some countries could be affected by CKD, representing a staggering increase of nearly 60% of advanced-stage cases. CKD is a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and other health complications. Early detection and management are crucial to slowing disease progression and improving patient outcomes. It’s important to encourage preventative measures: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and managing blood pressure, can significantly reduce the risk of developing CKD. In addition, regular check-ups and screenings can help detect CKD in its early stages, allowing for timely intervention. Preventive care may not be the solution to reducing healthcare costs and improving patient outcomes. Helping our members lead their best lives is what we're all about. That's why Humana Healthcare Research recently conducted a study on those with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and learned the managing their coexisting conditions could help keep them out of the hospital and lower healthcare costs. The most common causes of CKD are diabetes and high blood pressure, so best practices for managing CKD include recommendations for managing these conditions as well. Our research shows that patients who stay on top of their diabetes and hypertension treatments are up to 40% less likely to be hospitalized, 30% less likely to visit an emergency department, and have lower total monthly healthcare costs. These findings are important because they show how treatment programs for patients with kidney disease should also focus on additional underlying conditions to better improve health outcomes and reduce out of pocket expenses. We were honored to sponsor a recent roundtable focused on early detection of heart failure, kidney disease, diabetes, and other metabolic risk factors. The discussions centered around the necessity to update the content and frequency of preventive check-ups by general practitioners, the current landscape, and the required changes to the reimbursement decree, patient follow-up, and referrals. Key insights from the discussion included: 1. Revising the Preventive Check-ups Decree: It is essential to have more frequent and comprehensive check-ups to facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment. 2.
