Innovation is a word often associated with brands and the private sector. However, charities need to innovate too or risk not meeting evolving needs of their audience. Here are four ways that we continually practice innovation at My Life My Say👇 1️⃣ Design Thinking We schedule time to think outside the box as a team. Encourage ideas that initially seem out of pocket, out of reach and out of budget. Throw them down on post-its, white boards and push each idea to the limit. We keep building on the good ideas until you have some winners. I love that at MLMS we have a team of people who approach questions from different angles (creatives/ operations / social media gurus / event planners / interns) which makes this process high gains (+ so much more fun). 2️⃣ Co-creation Those who have followed my journey know this is something I continuously advocate for. It’s not a tick box, it’s your secret to high-impact. The beneficiaries of your work know what works best, and so as organisations we must empower them to steer our work as much as possible. What does this look like? Building an eco-system of support; payment where there’s significant commitment necessary, providing extra resources for skill development and regular check-ins. Watch the innovation that follows. 3️⃣ Unique partnerships Partnerships are your secret to growth and a catalyst for innovation. As a sector we could be SO much more creative in our collective approach to partnership building. Think of unique partnerships that will not only make people curious but could build upon your work from a different angle, fulfilling your charitable missions in a way that hasn’t been done before. With MLMS’ Give An X voter registration campaign, we created bespoke partnerships with Tinder, Snapchat, Ben & Jerry’s which were exciting for both the brand and built upon our mission. 4️⃣ Diverse teams This is the silver bullet. Hire a team from diverse backgrounds and life experiences that continuously approach challenges + objectives from different angles. Embrace team members who don’t just deliver goals but are determined to do things differently. Without this, the above points are that much harder to deliver. When any organisation innovates, it has to acknowledge that mistakes are inevitable. However, when charities fail to innovate they risk overlooking the evolving needs of their beneficiaries.
