Axus Technology has received $12.5 million in capital funding from growth capital firm IntrinSiC Investment LLC. As an established equipment manufacturer with a strong installed base and leadership in advanced silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor processing, Axus Technology has developed a core understanding of technologies related to CMP – specifically, semiconductor wafer polishing, thinning and cleaning. As a result, the company is extremely well positioned to drive toward volume sales of, and enter new markets with, its highly differentiated Capstone® and Aquarius™ platforms. [PARTNERSHIP] 🤝 NY CREATES, CEA-Leti and SPINTEC announced a strategic research partnership at Leti Innovation Days. It will start with a focus on enabling next-gen magnetic memory devices at 300mm wafer scale.   Officials from the New York Center for Research, Economic Advancement, Technology, Engineering, and Science (NY CREATES), based in Albany, N.Y., and CEA-Leti say their joint development agreement will build upon each other’s strengths in memory-device R&D. 🔎 Spintec and CEA-Leti will contribute with their expertise in magnetics, spintronics and the testing of related devices, and NY CREATES will provide the facilities, process integration expertise, and materials process development to run the 300mm silicon hardware. Slightly over two years ago, on the cold yet bright evening of 31st October 2021, I arrived at the PSI Paul Scherrer Institut to work as a Scientist. Two months before, I had left Singapore with my professional life in doldrums. The door was firmly closed. I thought my career in lithography was finished and my grand ideas for pushing lithography to its ultimate limits will never come to fruition. Little did I realize that a door had opened for me to do something bigger and far better than what I had accomplished in the past. At PSI, Yasin Ekinci asked me to develop resists for the state-of-the-art extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography and added that he was "expecting a jackpot". On the other hand, I never worked in the field of EUV lithography and had no "feel" for either the resist behaviour under EUV radiation or the process. Naturally, I was nervous. Three months of uncertainty followed my arrival. Our group had no chemistry lab and Yasin reminded me that "we are a physics group" who work in Röntgenlithographie mit Synchrotronstrahlung. I had to set up one with a nitrogen and vacuum line in a tiny fumehood in the back of our cleanroom which I called "the Garage". I started doing chemical synthesis, initially straight-forward ones, and later added complexity. Since I wanted to avoid being trapped in the dogma associated with the results of other people's thinking, I ended up taking a completely different approach towards EUV resist development. It was a risky move. From hindsight, this turned out to be the best decision - the learning curve was steep and difficult but it made me single out good resists, processes, and mechanistic pathways for both EUV and electron beam lithography. In March 2022, I had the first taste of success - we had resists that could be patterned using the EUV light at respectable doses. By the summer of 2022, we had sufficient results and were ready to apply for a patent. Late 2022 and a good part of 2023 was spent at XIL-II beam line at the Swiss Light Source doing day-, and most of the time, night-shifts (on a few occasions, I did 24 hr shifts as well!) to test and evaluate various resists that I had synthesised. A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it. In fact, I did not want to come to PSI to work but I was left with no choice. After my unceremonious exit from Singapore, I was unemployed, with a family to support and with two kids studying at university, my savings were burning quickly. So I came to PSI and it turned out to be the best thing. Eventually, everything fell into its place, the hard work paid off, and the outcome is what you read below.
