What Does Embracing Your Roster Mean?
As Executive Managers we can often operate at such a high level that we forget the importance of truly Embracing Every Single Player on the Roster. That is often borne out in the frequency of transactions. But Embracing Your Roster is an important and often overlooked Framework that protects value.
After drafting Isaiah Joe in 2020 with the 49th Pick, the Philadelphia 76ers waived Joe only two years later. In his time in Philadelphia, Joe was used sparingly. In his Rookie Season he made 41 appearances playing 9 minutes per game and making 36.8% of his 3s. In his 2nd Season he made 55 appearances playing 11 minutes per game and shooting 40.5% from 3.
After being Waived, Joe was signed by the Oklahoma City Thunder and almost immediately became a revelation. In the last two years he's averaged close to 20 minutes a game while shooting 40.9% and 41.8% from 3.
Isaiah Joe is a reminder of why it is important to Embrace Your Entire Roster, Invest Significant Resources in Player Development, Create Clear Pathways for Every Player, and Finally Adhere to the Principles of Active Integration.
Finally, during the trade deadline the Sixers traded away young combo guard Jaden Springer to the Boston Celtics for a 2nd Round Pick. While this transaction hasn't been dissected with any vigor it certainly one to file away over the next couple of years.
