THERE’S A REASON FOR EVERYTHING… Everything happens for a reason, whether it's something you're excited about or not. It's all for a purpose in the big picture. Enjoy the process knowing it will be used to make you stronger in the long run. Sometimes certain events are necessary in order for a grander opportunity to cross our paths. I had the privilege to scout talent across the world. During the process, I scheduled an interview for 2 people at the same time with different professional roles (Automotive Electrician & HD Fitter) but with the same question on a mobile plant fault. After the engagement with these gentlemen, one of the senior management questioned why I did that and one of the applicants was also not happy because he said was I trying to expose his weaknesses? My reasons for doing this 2-man interview was that, there’s a lot of instances where when a machine breakdown or a recurring faults happen; there is sometimes a blame game between Auto Electricians and HD Fitters especially when the machine fault is complicated. So I was expecting these from them: 1. Teamwork 2. Collaboration and knowledge sharing in solving the machine fault 3. Individual weaknesses and what one can do to cover up 4. Learning from each other Stochastically, I have been in the mining maintenance field(Engineering Management, Automotive Electrical/Electronics, HD Fitter, HVAC, and AHS) for awhile and I know the pros and cons as well as RAMs(Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety) is concerned and I have seen some of the drawbacks. I love this post. There is a huge gap in our current and desired education system. Exams are passed to get diplomas and degrees only. Even educated people treat labor or technician very badly while they don't have skills. First of all, skill based education is must and further on-job training is must. Another aspect is attitude which comes only after when some one do job by his own hand. In the name of smart working or handling, lot of people loosing chances to get done work by their own hands. I remember in 2006 when I was using walky-talky and monitoring two projects: 2x23 MW CPP and weaving mill, simultaneously spread at a distance of 700 meter. Me, personally did cable termination, maintenance of transformer, pulling old aluminum cables to replace with copper, climb up to peak of lattice tower of transmission line to check tightness of earth bond, tightness of cables, climbing on wind tower, replacement of bearings in the motor, distill water top up in batteries, generator carbon brush replacement and many others. I would like to share a recent incident with skill based education at an entertainment plaza named 3rd Space, run by M/s Secure meters in Udaipur where my daughter when cutting a wooden piece using hacksaw: her dialogue was very crucial and eye opening. That was: "Today I came to know that how hard is to make a keychain with woods." The point is that we all are running fast ignoring skill based education in the schools and on job trainings at organizations. Do not be just Theoretical Engineer. Work like technician. You must see, observe, understand the practical aspects of it. Do regular site visits. Talk to the labours, crane operator, mechanic, mason, electricians, plumber, carpenter…. These are the real practical people from whom we must learn. Our education system has made us only theoretical degree holders. We cannot change the bulb, cannot fix fans, cannot tighten the simple screw, cannot clean the choke up sink of our kitchen, cannot clean the choke up of wash basin, cannot change the vehicle tyre in case of puncture ( we do not know how to raise the car upwards with the help of jack ). There are so many things for which we need a practical training syllabus in our education system. We even do not know the simple banking transactions, investment methods, saving techniques, share market, finance and accounts; the reason being it is not in our school syllabus. That is why Technician is much more important and valuable than the theoretical Engineers. When the technician charges you say Rs 100, we naturally ask why Rs 100 ? The reply is he knows where the exact problem is and how to fix it and for that he charges Rs 99/- for his practical analysis and solution and Rs 1 as his theoretical fee. So, just be a good observer, do most of the things yourself, live your life in a practical way. Having just a graduation / degree in any field without practical knowledge does not have any meaning.
