We had an excellent Meta-research Summer School in Friderichsdorf. I’d like to thank all instructors (Anita Bandrowski, Malcolm Macleod, Malte Elson, Vladislav Nachev, Ian Hussey and Max Frank), participants, and our organizational partners (QUEST, German Reproducibility Network and Meta-rep). This would not have been possible without generous funding from VolkswagenStiftung. We are continuing to work on the tools and projects developed during the summer school, and will share outputs on OSF: https://osf.io/gdpz6/ During the hackathon, participants worked on creating 2 automated screening tools. ContriBOT: This tool is designed to automatically detect author contributions statements and acknowledgements sections in scientific papers. It should also determine whether the author contributions statement describes author contributions, whether it follows the CRediT taxonomy, and whether it contains assurances that all authors met the criteria for authorship or take responsibility for the contents of the paper. Colorblind accessibility tool: This tool is designed to detect rainbow or red-green colormaps in heatmaps and scatterplots, or identify images with rainbow or red-green colormaps overlayed (e.g. doppler ultrasound, thermal imaging, MRI, etc.). Summer school participants also worked in small groups to design meta-research projects, which they continue to work on. 1. Automated tool for detecting subsections in abstracts: The group is creating an automated tool to detect subsections in abstracts (e.g. background, knowledge gap, objectives, methods, results, discussion and conclusions, limitations, claims of novelty, claims of application, claims of methodological strength). 2. Efficiency of the systematic review process: This study will examine factors that may influence the time efficiency of completing a systematic review (e.g. number of authors, funding). 3. CRediT statements in retracted papers: This study will compare CRediT statements in retracted and non-retracted papers in PLOS One. 4. Meta-methods studies: These studies will examine methodological variability in studies that use specific tasks. Several studies were proposed; each will focus on a different task (e.g. PANAS, d2, dichotic listening task, heartbeat counting).

📝💡 What was the impact of Protestantism on the development of Aesthetics in Scandinavia? Why seems there to be a predilection for simplicity, logocentrism, a specific ethics, relatedness to the world and a tension between pronounced individualism and collectivism? We investigate these questions in an international project. You can follow our work on link here bellow : https://lnkd.in/edXHE82K

Join us on February 28th at Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum, for an insightful exploration of Systems Thinking, Problem Structuring Methods, and Behavioral Operational Research. 🔍 Our speakers will delve into how these methodologies can significantly impact decision-making and policymaking, both in government and the private sector. In today's complex landscape, the need for systems approaches has never been more crucial. While strategies were vital in the past, our current challenges demand a deeper understanding and collaborative effort. 🌐 We're at a pivotal moment, with initiatives like the STP apprenticeship and the growing Systems Thinking Interest Group in Govt and industry. Embracing systems approaches is poised to become the standard in navigating complexity. The future lies in our collective hands, and we are the catalysts for this change. During the event, our presenters will cover topics ranging from the rational to the emotional and political dimensions of decision-making processes. 📌 Don't miss out on the opportunity to engage with our SIG chairs and share your key takeaways! Let's come together to shape the future of decision-making! 🚀 #ORSSIGEvent #SystemsThinking #ProblemSolving #DecisionMaking

When you step through the doors, you're walking in the same halls where groundbreaking scientists like Humphry Davy and Michael Faraday made discoveries that changed the world! Imagine being in the very room where they experimented with chemicals and created the first electric generators. It's like taking a step back in time and watching the birth of modern science. And the best part? The Royal Institution is still a buzzing center for scientific education and research. They work hard to make science exciting and accessible to everyone, whether you're young or just young at heart. Now, why haven't more people heard about this amazing place? It's a bit of a mystery! Many of us might have seen the exciting Christmas lectures on TV, but not realized where they were being broadcast from. It's like having a superstar in your neighborhood and not knowing they live right next door. So next time you're wandering through Mayfair, keep an eye out for the Royal Institution. Whether you love the thrill of a science experiment or just want to soak up some history where great minds once stood, this is a spot you can't miss. Get ready to be wowed by the wonders of science and the stories of the past, all under one roof! Now isn't that something to chat about with your friends?

AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow (@NSF) & Psychology Professor (@SantaClaraUniversity) Views my own.
Storytelling is such an important part of communicating science.
AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow @ National Science Foundation, TIP Directorate, Office of the Assistant Director. Opinions my own.
Thrilled to have co-hosted this Storytelling event as a co-lead of the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships affinity group, the STEAM Team! Working with The Story Collider’s Shane M Hanlon, PhD, our fellow fellows were able to work up a phenomenal set of science-related stories and present them, while thinking about using them in everyday public engagement. Also, excited to have handed out attendees a copy of Faith Kearns’ book “Getting to the Heart of Science Communication”! Great way to end a good week.
