SHRM announced that they've made the "strategic decision" to remove Equity from the titling of their Inclusion & Diversity programs. It makes no sense. Without equity, diversity means nothing. Without equity, inclusion does not exist. Equity is the key to ensuring that professional success isn't predictable by socioeconomic status, race, gender, and other social factors. Because the reality is we do not all start from the same place. We do not all have the same needs, resources, or opportunities to find success. Discrimination, financial barriers, caregiving responsibilities, and social norms have held women and underrepresented groups (with an outsize impact on Black and Latinx women) back for decades in everything from college graduation rates to starting salaries, pay raises, and promotion rates. Removing equity from the spotlight is equivalent to sweeping those systemic hurdles under the rug, because... "politics". I dropped my SHRM membership years ago when it became clear they were more focused on compliance than progress. And I hope my colleagues will do the same, and send a message that this organization's actions do not represent the view of the millions of HR practitioners working hard every day to do right by our employees.

I dropped my membership years ago. They have been making decisions that have raised my eyebrows. I still support the local chapters

Danielle, I dropped my SHRM membership as well as the mission of the organization was not aligned with how I see HR in practice. It's too bad that they aren't "HR for HR."

Thank you for sharing. It's disappointing the number of organizations that are abandoning DEI.

It feels so weird to say this, but I have no plans to renew my SHRM certification. “Equal” doesnt mean “equitable”!

My team was just talking about this yesterday.....can't quote some of our comments here! We are having a bigger call about it because we just invested a lot as an org in providing SHRM training for folks. Not a good look SHRM!
