15 months ago, my wife and I had to press the big red Pause button of life because we were laid off just weeks apart. I expected the journey to be difficult, but I discovered it to be far more difficult than anticipated. As with every other time I've been unemployed after a layoff (this is my third rodeo), there were those who said "What are your plans? You have so much time to do whatever you want!" I do ... except that we have no income and don't know when or if we will again. Traveling on savings that may have to become grocery money is ill-advised at best. It feels the same as if someone set me on fire and asked "Aren't you glad you're not cold anymore?" No, I need to put this out immediately. So, I started fighting the fire within hours of getting the dreaded company email. Even with unemployment benefits, we burned through eight years of savings (for the next car, the next house, travel, home improvement, etc) just to tread water (i.e. exist). We lowered expenses as best as we could, saying goodbye to a bunch of subscriptions, throttling our internet, cutting back on groceries, delaying a surgery, and not going out to do much of anything in order to save gas and the expense of whatever that "anything" might have been. Mostly, we were job searching, networking, applying, upskilling, etc. Fortunately, I eventually got an offer, and on July 1st, I started as the QA manager for a company called Drivemode, which was acquired by Honda five years ago. We will be building the mobile app to pair with Honda's upcoming EVs. Thank you to those who checked in regularly. We're at the beginning of an insanely long road to build back up. I want this post to serve as a glimmer of hope for those still searching. There were many, *many* times throughout that I thought I was never going to find something. I don't have a magic formula that says "Do this, and ye shall be free." I just kept trying. It's all I could do. I think there was a bit of star alignment and a lot of luck. I will likely be slow to reply to comments on this post, as I am super busy with the new role, but I will do my best because I know what it's like to remain unemployed while someone else moves on, and that's a tough show to watch, no matter how happy we are for the lucky person. --- Possibly Interesting Job Search Data Total Days Unemployed - 434 Total Applications - 137 Rejections - 63 Assumed Rejections - 62 Other (Role Removed, etc) - 12 Recruiter Screens - 29 Hiring Manager Interviews - 12 Final Round Interviews - 3 Offers - 1 Quickest Rejection - 36 hours Slowest Rejection - 50 days Longest Assumed Rejection - Applied on April 13, 2023 ... still waiting to hear Worst Rejection - I made it to the final round in November 2023, and then they ghosted me. Can someone in the IT industry help me understand something? For 20 years, we've heard how this is the industry to get into, to be in. The entry costs are (relatively) low, the compensation is (relatively) high, and the opportunities are plentiful. Yet, this post, many others like it, and the comments below them would indicate a HIGH level of volatility and not as many opportunities waiting to be filled as one might think? Were we sold a bad bill of goods? Has the market changed that much in the last decade? Or is there something else at play here?

I was laid off a year ago and had a similar experience. I’m STILL looking for a job. I hope that anyone going through this makes it through stronger for it because it can be so difficult 🤍 In the last 3 months alone I’ve applied to 42 jobs with no offers 😩 Thank you for sharing your experience and for giving me hope that there’s light at the end of the tunnel

It’s an absolute horror show. Smart move ignoring people’s suggestions to burn your money. I lost 40 pounds during it also. Where can I find your music?

This is the story of so many people. We have been in a worst recession for the past 2 yrs. Each day is a new struggle, finding a job now is a miracle. Those who have a gig don't know how lonely it gets out here. But once they are laid off, there is no going back. Maybe 2025 will be different, but everyday we are seeing new round of layoff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBDwcIhmprE&t=1794s&pp=ygURcmVhbHRhbGtzMSBsYXlvZmY%3D

Dude. 50 days. I've had a rejection mail "stuck in the mail queue" (lol) that arrived one year later.

After reading this post and comments it made me think of my situation. 20+ years in IT and growing thru many roles to management. I transitioned last year to a company that I expected to be a good move but learned that without good leadership you can't expect to grow. 1 month today I was laid off but I saw it coming. Although executive management wasn't sharing to thru status I knew from experience that when you build your team from the top down with individuals that experience was lack luster the time would come where layoffs would ensue. I started planning so that I could take my future into my own hands and started my own company. I anticipate that with in 90 days I will be back up to my salary and should close to double it in 1 year. Sometimes you have to take the skills you have learned from 20 years of working in a field and put them to work for you.

Ooof Dan, I'm so sorry for the crazy ordeal you and your wife had to go through! The same thing happened to my husband and I last fall. I totally emphasize. Really glad to hear you found something, and something solid it sounds like. Sending you all the good vibes. Is your wife still looking? If so, can we help?
