For years, I have counseled my clients about the importance of consistent and clear messaging. You can't say one thing to your employers, another to your customers and yet a third thing to Wall Street. This week, Wendy's was the prime example why that doesn't work. If, indeed, Wendy's wants to offer discounts to customers at low-traffic times to drive additional foot traffic to stores and then basically ask if the customer "wants fries with that"...well there's not much new or controversial about that. Presumably, the innovation comes from being able to offer discounts that incentive customers on a hyper-local level. But you have to say all of that to everyone. And if you ever do find that you need to issue a statement clarifying a previous statement admit that the reason it was necessary was because you did not clearly articulate your initial message and not because the media"misconstrued" what was said. #corporatecommunications #clearcommunication #leadership #soapbox https://lnkd.in/gMEW7jP6

McDonald's: How They Turned Things Around Back in the early 2000s, McDonald's was having a tough time. People weren't as interested in their food, and the vibe in their restaurants felt a bit outdated.  So, they decided to make some big changes. They shook up their menu, adding healthier options like salads and wraps to give folks more choices. Not just that, they also spruced up their restaurants, making them nicer places to hang out and eat. It was all about making customers happy. And you know what? It worked! There’s this red brick Thai restaurant Annie and I go to in the city. I dare say it’s our favorite restaurant as we always seem to find a way to mention it. So what’s so spectacular about it? Nothing. We sit at the bar. The noodles steam when the bowls rattle down, we smile at the first bite, and we’re out in 45 minutes. When you know what you’re getting, your brain has to do less work. Which means the path to get it is quicker, easier, and requires less thinking. Which means you’ll travel it more. It’s easy to believe splash is what creates buy-in.
