CEO at Uber

I just arrived at #WEF24 — and, as always, there is a lot to discuss. At the top of my list this year is the climate crisis and the electrification of transportation. While the shift to electric vehicles is one of the few bright spots in the energy transition, I’m seeing too many signals that even the most climate-conscious governments and automakers are slowing down. And while the challenges are real—high interest rates, stubbornly high EV prices, insufficient charging—these are problems to solve, not excuses to slow down. Today, Uber drivers are going electric 7x faster than the general public, and when one driver goes electric, they deliver up to 4x the emission benefits. This is encouraging, but we’ll never hit our climate goals without stronger action by policymakers and industry. I believe we should focus on 3 things to accelerate electrification: 1️⃣ Phase out internal combustion vehicles by requiring automakers to go fully electric by 2035 at the latest. Without that move, it will be hard to continue to bring the price of EVs down to parity with combustion vehicles. It’s simple: drivers won’t go electric if it doesn’t make financial sense. 2️⃣ We need more incentives that target “working drivers” like Uber drivers. These folks do many more miles on the road than average because they drive for a living. So focusing incentives here can deliver outsized climate benefits. 3️⃣ We need more equitable and reliable charging infrastructure. Many Uber drivers don’t have driveways or garages and tend to live in “charging deserts” where overnight chargers are not being built fast enough. We’ve started to use data to help inform governments where the next wave of infrastructure should go, but much more focus is needed here. You can read my full Fast Company op-ed below. I believe Uber drivers are key to our all-electric future, but it's going to take ALL of us working together to meet our climate ambitions.

February 14 2024 SHUTDOWN TURN OFF YOUR UBER DRIVER APP. THIS GUY WILL RECEIVE A BONUS OF $54 MILLIONS IF UBER KEEPS THE STOCK PRICE OVER THE $63 USD. STOCK PRICE THAT IS POSSIBLE THANKS TO UBER STRUGGLING DRIVERS AROUND THE WORLD WITH THE SHIT THEY ARE PAYING AND SATURATING THE STREETS WITH DRIVERS EVEN WHEN THE DEMAND DON'T CLAIM IT. YOU ARE ON THE WAY TO CREATE A HUGE DISASTER FOR THE NEXT LOW SEASON IN SOME CITIES OF USA.

I'd like to see the issue of vehicle lifespan and repair facilities addressed. This was a major barrier for Hertz, and EV manufacturers seem committed to making throwaway gadgets instead of reliable machines. If there was investment into OEM parts distribution, reseller/repair infrastructure, and aftermarket support this might all change for the better. Ford might be making headway into this world but others have refused. An ICE ban (even a decade out) seems like a shortsighted proposition at this point.

I do agree on #2 and #3 based on my first-hand conversations with many drivers in the past couple of years (during Covid and afterwards), they should be the primary target audience for all EV companies - existing or new ones. This is more important now, especially in the new economy where the way we work or go to workplace is already changing or changed significantly, uber (and other such rider providers) are going to be one of the primary mode of transportation in parallel to or second to public transportation, specially in suburbs. Driving the cost down for users and increasing margins for drivers should be one of the primary mission for all such companies including Uber and for that to work sustainably in the long run, moving towards more EV is the way which will then help solve the purpose of addressing climate crisis as a leading factor to this change.

These are critical points that echo what we hear from Uber and other gig drivers in our extensive work and interviews with them. Especially the need for targeted incentives and affordable widespread fast charging. That charging needs to have affordable monthly subscription pricing. We also need a lot more outreach to drivers, and help dealing with predatory high car loan interest rates. https://forthmobility.org/why-electric/rideshare-drivers

Wow 7x faster??!!!?? Important stat

This guy, Dara says that drivers are making 30% more of what they were making 5 years ago. https://youtube.com/shorts/Eu2cFDdyuMM?si=FY5JaaCPBW4VsZNh That's happening only in your mind or your planet, but not here in 🌎. With more drivers the network becomes more liquid??? Surge comes down? EAT comes down? While Uber turn the network more liquid that give you the power to manipulate what you charge clients and what you pay drivers creating a breach of up to 80% in favor of the company. Surge disappeared for drivers but when there is a high demand Uber charge that high demand to riders but don't pay it to drivers. Surge now is only for Uber convenience. EAT is made completely in favor of riders. Why do you need to have drivers 1 mimute away of any request when 80% of riders never are waiting for drivers at the pickup point. You make UberX drivers wait up to 14 minutes something ABUSIVE and the higher the category is higher the waiting time. And the 14 minutes only collect around $1.40. The only way to stop all this abuse is going to our Lawmakers and changing the rules. You have no regulations, the drivers have no legal support at all. this is the face of lies
