It’s a time we’ve set aside for everyone to have time off to step back from the daily grind, disconnect from our workstations, and enjoy a well-deserved break. I am spending my time in Canada at Jasper, Banff, and Yoho National Parks doing hiking and biking with my family. 😊 It’s a rare opportunity for a collective pause, a chance to refresh our minds and rejuvenate our spirits. During this week the company commits that there will be no emails, no calls, and no video meetings. The hustle of work will be on pause so that all our associates can focus on what truly matters to them. It’s a time to reconnect with family and friends, pursue passions, or embrace the joy of doing absolutely nothing at all. A lawyer as a corporate board director? I appreciate the growing recognition that Senior In-House lawyers are invaluable assets for corporate board director roles. "Their unique skill sets, honed through years of navigating complex legal terrains, equip them to enhance boardroom dynamics and corporate decision-making." Expertise in navigating complex regulatory environments, risk management proficiency, and crisis management experience is critical to board corporate governance. Nominating and Governance Chairs should pause to consider whether a Chief Legal Officer can add that diversity of thought and knowledge to their board composition.

An award and a reminder to keep paying it forward. Receiving The OnBoard Excellence Award is a great honor. I am appreciative that OnBoard Inc. highlighted me as a senior female executive recognized by her colleagues as someone who serves with excellence in her profession and is ready for corporate board service. More meaningful though is the recognition of being one who actively mentors and advocates for other women professionals seeking to advance their careers. This mentorship is so important to build confidence and ensure success in the emerging leaders who come behind us as they navigate their paths. The best part of the Awards breakfast occurred after the award ceremony when two young women approached me separately to ask if they could set up a time to chat with me about their careers and seek some guidance. With an award or not, the reminder is to take your success and pay it forward, and help others rise and succeed. That is the gift that keeps giving. Allyship involves individuals from different backgrounds coming together to create change and advocating for inclusion and empowerment. I strive always to be such an ally. Women are one of the fastest-growing segments of new small business owners but often lack access to funding and resources. Through "Fund Her Future", H&R Block's Business Grant for Women, we will provide $100,000 in grants, plus a year of Block Advisors' small business services. Proud to be supporting women-owned small businesses.

As H&R Block's CEO Jeff Jones shares, we reversed our return-to-office policy and opted for a flexible arrangement that allows individuals and teams to determine when to be in the office. As a leader, this allows me to empower associates to do what's best for them, lead from a position of trust and respect, and lean into strengthening our connected culture in creative ways. I couldn't be prouder of our determination and courageousness to do what works best for our associates and our company.

"There are now five generations in the workforce simultaneously. . . a first in modern history. . . . For managers of multigenerational workforces, engaging all generations is essential - not just for employee satisfaction, but also for the company's overall success." I see this multigenerational workforce as an absolute gift - for employees to learn from one another in terms of thinking, ways to work, and experiences that come from different life stages. As leaders, we have the opportunity to create strong, diverse teams by looking at the best that every member and every generation can contribute.
