White Collar Recession. That's what they are calling it. College educated, six figure earners are not getting as many jobs as they used to. The number of those jobs added to the overall economy have been dismal in the past year. Know who is getting hired? Plumbers. Electricians. Technians. Construction workers. Mechanics. Entry level college graduates average around $55,409 Entry level plumbers average around $66,560 While we typically work with more senior level and executive folks here, we also write technical and blue collar resumes. I think we've developed more master electrician, nuclear plant operators, and master mechanics resumes over the past year than we've seen in 20 years. Let’s bring back the respect for blue-collar jobs. The base pay of a private electrician is $55/hour. Still, people think electricians are not the brightest? They make infrastructure safe. They create beyond value for people. They put in crazy hours to get the job done. Still, many take them for granted. These people aren’t in construction because they couldn’t be anywhere else. Last week, I successfully placed a candidate in an electrical maintenance role they lacked the skills for. This position had been tough to fill, as electrical maintenance is a rare skill set often commanding salaries of 50k+. Finding qualified candidates is challenging, and counter offers from current employers are common. This placement worked for one reason. The employer listended to my advice. Instead of insisting on specific experience, they allowed me to find an electrician with some industrial background. They committed to bridging any skill gaps with training and development. The key factor was finding a candidate who was eager to learn and committed to the role. The employer valued dedication and potential over existing skills. Why this worked: 1. Sector-specific consultant offering tailored advice 2. Employer that listens to adivce and acts quickly 3.
