I have had a few people contact me regarding what we at Moorabool are looking for in relation to the just advertised GM role. Below is a summary of some key items we will be looking for in the successful candidate. The most consistent question I have received relates to Local Government experience. While it may help, it is not a prerequisite. Too much of something is not always a good thing. The previous occupant of the role has worked with Moorabool for 4 years and had no prior Local Government Experience. The role has become vacant as they secured a GM role at a larger metro council closer to where they live. Other items – ·        We work hard - Since 2018 our Capital works delivery has risen from $11.6m to $51.3m in 2023, we have a Budget spend of $56.4m for 2024 – our staffing has only increased by 9% over this period. ·        We advocate strongly - Total rate income in 2018 was $29.5m and is now $35.8m, yet Capital spend has increased by $44.8m and total revenue has increase by $43m over the same time period. ·        We respect different opinions - We are looking for someone willing to participate at the exec level beyond portfolio responsibilities. ·        We know what we must do - We have a council plan with ambitious targets – this is what we mark ourselves against. ·        We seek to lead in many areas. o  We use technology to serve a clear purpose, we do not just follow. o  Where we cannot deliver ourselves, we will seek to partner. o  When required we will take an appropriate view on risk.

Today, we (myself and Saffron Hardy) embarked on our weekly drops, making our usual rounds. To our surprise, at every single stop, we were greeted by the same sign: "Reverse Parking Only." Initially, we were puzzled, but then we started to appreciate the rationale behind it. What does it mean? Essentially, it requires drivers to back into parking spaces rather than pulling in forward. 📋 Reverse parking offers several benefits, especially in large work car parks. First, it enhances safety by providing a clear view of the road when exiting the space, reducing the risk of collisions. 🚗💥 Second, it streamlines the process of loading and unloading vehicles, making it quicker and more efficient. 🚚📦 Finally, it contributes to better overall traffic flow within the car park, minimizing congestion and potential accidents. Is a being a City Manager like being a CEO of a Company? 🤔 hmmm ... Before I delved into local government a few years ago, I didn’t fully understand the role of a City Manager. However, after connecting with various city managers, I realized their job is akin to that of a CEO in a company. Just like a company CEO, a City Manager has: 👉 Customers == Residents 👉 Stakeholders == City Council 👉 Employees == City Staff 👉 Products == Strategic Initiatives & Programs 👉 Budget == City Budget 👉 Company growth == City's Economic Development ..... and the list goes on City Managers are responsible for delivering services to residents, managing feedback, launching new initiatives, balancing the budget, handling public relations, communicating progress ..... the list goes on. It’s a role that demands versatility and resilience. Being a City Manager is far from easy. Success leads to more responsibilities and higher expectations from stakeholders. If something goes wrong, even beyond their control, they bear the blame. The role of a City Manager "is like" being a CEO of a Company. 💪 They have similar responsibilities, stakeholders, and the pressure. From my conversations with City Managers, it’s clear they are dedicated individuals who genuinely strive to improve their communities. While every field has its exceptions, the majority are committed to making their cities better places to live. Next time you enjoy a safe walk in your neighborhood, visit a community center, experience a farmers market, or relax in a park, take a moment to appreciate the city officials who make it all possible. A simple thank you can go a long way in recognizing their hard work and dedication. #citymanagers #localgovernment
