Great paper! The use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) is becoming more common, especially for large wildfires where it is difficult to understand the state of the fire conditions or efficiently suppress the fire. The focus of this paper by my friend, Sayaka Suzuki and her coauthors, is to discuss the challenges that are currently faced in using UAS, which are limiting the broader application of these systems for use in large outdoor fire events. The paper provides an overview of UAS currently used today as well as some guides and standards that have been developed to support the use of UAS. Challenges for use of these systems are discussed based on technical hardware/software as well as operational details related to policy and training. With fire seasons lasting longer, and becoming more challenging for authorities to manage with physical resources becoming stretched globally, we will start to see more opportunities for technology to support more traditional emergency management strategies and resources. With the rapid growth in capability and accessibility of unmanned aircraft as just one example, we are likely to see EM agencies playing catch-up, implementing technology that is out of date and obsolete by the time approvals and doctrine are finalised. Delivering a better outcome could be as simple as participating in the initial development of this potentially life saving technology ensuring opportunities to be involved in the design, testing and implementation of this equipment. Making sure it complements existing resources for a well balanced holistic approach, delivering continuous growth and improved outcomes for the implementation stage in support of our communities.

Night surveillance training for our team. Wildfires don't stop at night but many aerial teams do. Due to low visibility the increased danger isn't worth risking human lives. Drones solve this issue. Flying above wildfires, using infrared imaging, we send digital maps of fire lines to the tablets of firefighters on the ground. Watching how the fire is moving allows first responders to make faster decisions to target specific areas to stop fires before they consume residential areas. Cooler nights are more bearable to fight fires in, than the hot, sunny day time, allowing continuous progress to eliminate fires. Our team is working day and night.
