I haven’t posted in a while, but I’m left feeling the need to share the outcome of a recent Uber support experience because their handling of the matter was shocking and unacceptable. I’m 37 weeks pregnant. I went into the office this week and needed to take an Uber home. Days are shorter and it was dark. When the Uber arrived, he parked on the opposite side of a busy one-way downtown SF street, which meant I had to wait for traffic to clear in order to safely cross. I opened the car door and was immediately like, “f***” — it wreaked of cigarette smoke. I had already waited a while and needed to get home to say goodnight to my daughter before she went to bed. I got in and rolled the window down all the way and wore my kn95 mask. I had to sit in that car for over an hour to get home because of traffic. I wrote Uber after to explain and strongly suggest that they indicate whether the driver is a smoker or not so people can prevent situations like this from occurring, especially women who are pregnant and for whom cigarette smoke poses a serious health risk. Uber could filter out smokers from drivers who can accept riders who indicate this as a requirement or concern, or inform you in advance so you can reject the ride. Obviously the former would be a better rider and driver experience. Uber said they take experiences like this seriously, then gave me a $5 Uber Cash credit (for a $78 ride), never acknowledged the fact that I am pregnant, generalized the cigarette smell to “unpleasant odors,” and did not express any willingness to explore how to prevent situations like this from happening again. The whole experience demonstrates their inadequate regard for women’s health. It’s not about the money; it’s about ensuring your service builds trust by prioritizing our health and safety. Let’s get to know Madison👇 Q: Which values of Versapay resonate with you the most, and why? “At Versapay, the value that hits home for me is "we help each other." Throughout my time here, our team has faced a lot of changes, but we’ve stuck together by leaning on one another. Whether it's through cross-training, making e-learning content, or leading training sessions, we really live out this value. Personally, I love helping people, so this value means a lot to me. I'm that friend you can call at 3 am with a flat tire (I can't change it, but I can brainstorm solutions) 😁!” Q: What do you like most about your role?  “Being in L&D, we have the amazing opportunity to partner with so many people across the organization. Building connections with each of these individuals during our virtual meetings truly makes my job something special.” Q: What's the weirdest food combination you enjoy?  “I don't know if it's necessarily weird, but I am a huge fan of ~girl dinners~. I'm not big on cooking so oftentimes I'll have cereal and ice cream (separately, of course), or my favorite crackers (Simple Mills sea salt crackers 😍) and a protein hot chocolate. Okay, that does sound a little weird after writing it out.” Q: What is one thing you are looking forward to doing when you retire? “I don't see myself ever fully retiring (although I might change my mind as I approach that stage!), but I do envision working part-time—perhaps at a winery or volunteering at an animal shelter. My husband and I are avid travelers, so retirement would likely mean exploring various destinations. We particularly love hiking and plan to continue discovering new trails and beautiful landscapes during that time.” #lifeatversapay 

Amazon or DoorDash has changed the game! You’re probably thinking, thank you Captain Obvious! What I really mean is that ease of access and contactless service has become the norm. We expect the least amount of steps to get what we want. This doesn’t just go for food or products. Again still not saying anything new here, I know. What about when it comes to mental health? We have those self-help apps, but what if we wanted to talk to someone? Well right now, most people still have to call a 1-800 number to get help. Even then, it still typically takes about 3 weeks to get in to speak with someone. Asking for help or support can be one of the hardest things for someone to do, so we should make it as easy as ordering food to get that help. 3 Quick ways to make that happen: Contactless scheduling - You don’t have to call the pizza place anymore to get a pizza, you shouldn’t need to call the EAP to get support Quick Time to Support - We can have something shipped from across the country in 3 days, why should you have to wait 3 weeks to get help Meeting Setting - People are busy and save time getting things delivered wherever they are, you should be able to get help from wherever you are Let’s make mental health support as easy as ordering food or a new bed. P.S. I just got my first king sized bed! Game Changer! 🙌

In my policing days, a fellow senior officer was very fond of daily night-patrolling and catching criminals. Sounds cool, right? In fact, the media loved and glorified it. But here is the problem -- that was not his job. His job was to guide his police station heads (SHOs) and make them more effective, instead of being a better SHO. To an outsider, it looks like 'catching' criminals is the biggest challenge in controlling crime -- nope. The biggest challenge is getting convictions (95-98% cases end in acquittal). And this officer ignored the task of securing convictions, which is tedious, thankless, and gets zero media attention. So all the criminals who were caught would soon go scot-free. Of course, night-patrolling was useful to see first-hand what was happening on the ground. But that's like the Zomato CEO doing a delivery -- one delivery a quarter is good, but trying to be a first-rate delivery guy every day would be disastrous. Early in my career, my IGP (inspector general of police) told me -- don't be a better sub-inspector, be a good superintendent of police. Today, as I run HabitStrong, that is a lesson I try not to forget.
