Every organization, every team, everyone acts in a particular place. As there is no perspective from nowhere, there is no action from no physical place. By realizing it, we start to recognize how this particular place that we are in defines us, our team, our organization. And then the question is how to start a dialogue with this place, how to find mutual growth, how to be together. Placemaking as a concept has many tools facilitating such a perspective. Therefore, we as The Critical and our experts are involved in establishing the Placemaking network in Lithuania. For these practices to be comprehended and applied. Recently our Research & Design team has started providing workshops for different stakeholders in Lithuania to enable a deeper relationship with the place, with its infrastructure. By the way, our Research and Design Strategy team lead Eugenijus Kaminskis together with Ieva Nagytė 伊薇 have formed the first Creative Placemaking guidebook in Lithuania. HAVE YOU HEARD OF THE SAYING "3RD TIME'S THE CHARM" ❓ So it was only the 3rd time lucky for me to be able to sit down with Miss Malaysia Finalist, Crystal L., over a cup of coffee ☕ . Why 3rd time lucky you ask ❓ While we have been connected for a while now on #LinkedIn, we never got around to meeting for a chat. Not until Marketing Kaw Kaw #MKK by Choobub Creatives at least where she sat next to me. Of course, cannot chat la ❗ Must focus on the wise words of Choo Ann NGOH who is the guest speaker of that session. The 2nd meet was bumping into her at The Curve during a weekend stroll with my family there. The universe is sending a signal. So Sea buckthorn 🍒 meets Sea horse 🌊 🐴 at the 3rd set-up over coffee. And her first question to me is a hard one. "Why are Sea buckthorns called Sea Buckthorns when they are mainly found in the mountain / alpine ranges ❓ " I was so unprepared for that question. But here is my reply ⬇ "Most plants and animals, especially those underwater or closer to the coast are often named (common name) after something more familiar to something the public at that time are more familiar with" Such as: - Seahorses - Horse-like head but is a fish - Sea grass - grass-like but under the sea. - Cat fish - got whiskers like a cat So I googled after and learnt that Sea buckthorns are confined to the coast in Western Europe whereas they are more commonly found in semi-desert 7 semi-alpine areas in Central Europe & Asia. So why Sea buckthorn 🍒 ❓ These orange-yellow berries have been used over the centuries as food, traditional medicine, & skin treatments. And this is where Crystal L. is in the business, utilising them as a Superfood and Skincare #wellness. We bounced ideas and shared our passions throughout the 3-hour meet. She is looking for B2B partners who would like to explore the wellness capabilities of the Sea buckthorn together. It was wet, it was dark and it was all uphill. And I absolutely loved it! On Sunday morning at 12:30 AM, our team Charlott McAnsh - Superconnector, Dan McCadden Nikola Masters Annette and Bob took to the hills to summit Pen Y Fan, the tallest mountain in the south of the UK. Despite the rain accompanying us most of the way up, the journey was filled with chatter, laughter, and an incredible sense of teamwork. This climb wasn't just about reaching the top of a mountain I have climbed dozens of times before, but about bonding as a team before we head off to meet the rest of the team, Tim Cockram and Karen, to conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro in 30 days. The climb was a tough test for my KAFOs from Thuasne UK and Thuasne USA, which truly made a difference, allowing me to maintain a good pace. But I know that Sean Adams and Tim Cooney will be glad to know that they smashed it and I am feeling very confident about this challenge and that the KAFO's will support me every step of the way to becoming the first person with CRPS to reach Mt Kilimanjaro summit. Walking in the darkness is always a unique experience, offering a rare moment to focus solely on the path ahead without any distractions. While we hoped for a sunrise at the summit, the weather reminded us to prioritise safety, saving that vision for another day. Ultimately, the climb was about the people and the shared experience. For some team members, it was their first night climb or their first time walking under a head torch's glow. After our descent, we piled into the campervan, warmed by coffee, tea, and cinnamon buns. We reflected on what we had gained from the experience and how these learnings would be invaluable for our Kilimanjaro adventure. This journey reinforced the power of team-building exercises and the value of stepping away from distractions to focus on the path ahead. It was a perfect little adventure with a fantastic team. My favourite part about projects is conducting joint research.  After years of networking, meetings and workshops with COST Action CA18204 Dynamics of placemaking and digitization in Europe´s cities, the first volume of the Dynamics of Placemaking Trilogy published by Brill is out! It was my pleasure to work with Emina Zejnilovic, DESPINA DIMELLI, Ayse Erek and Nika Đuho on the book chapter entitled Mega-events and Placemaking: Place Image Construction between Reality and Imagination. This chapter aims to bring together different perspectives of the placemaking process using a comparative study analysis of four distinct cities. What kind of places did events produce? How did event-led urban conditions merge under the radar of official planning guidelines in Sarajevo, Athens, Istanbul and Dubrovnik? We’ve taken Juna to Bali for her 4th birthday. It’s probably one more trip than we needed to take this year. But it’s consistent with my current plan of spending 3 months of the year overseas. Some people might say 3 months of travel is a bit excessive. Or that if my “real” life was any good, then I would not want to take that much time away from it. But doing this proves it’s possible to grow my business while working fewer hours than I previously did (it’s happening). And as long as I work smarter, and don’t lose focus on delivering more value to clients, I believe that it’s sustainable. This supports my vision and aligns with my values (I’m not the hustle guy). And it’s also what I want to help my clients achieve for themselves. Because even though 3 months off for a commercial real estate principal might not be possible. The broader point is that we are all compensated based on the value we deliver. Not by the amount of time we spend creating it. And that’s one of the main things I help my clients make the most of. Outside of the business, this is something we have the ability to do now. While Juna is young enough to not worry about her missing school. And, by the end of every trip away, we grow closer as a family, too.
