Did you know this? Our engraving press doubles as a foil stamper.
While walking around the shop I noticed a peculiar sight. Our engraving press had a foil roll set up and no engraving ink in the tray. Confused, I asked our pressman Jerry, what’s going on here?
He told me before we acquired the Kluge - our primary foil stamp press, back in the 1980’s the engraving press was used for engraving AND foil stamping.
But how I asked, engraving is a pressure process and foil stamping requires heat and pressure, so how can this be done?
Turns out, if you switch out the engraving plate and replace it with an alternate plate that looks just the same, connected to the press is a temperature controller that heats the plate to 175 - 200 degrees. That’s one hot plate!
This was fascinating to learn, our print plant carries so much history that we still utilize today. Nowadays we are distracted with modern techniques but what's old is still new to me! The more you know.
