"In another life, I thought I’d be an architect. With one look at those tuition fees, I was never seen or heard from again, but not before learning that good architects think not only of the observer — but of occupant, environment, and planet. I appreciated George William Colpitts’s “Bittersweet Lessons from 1973: Calgary’s New Polar Bear Enclosure” for its architectural features and clever perspectives. Coupling a broad look at Calgary Zoo’s historic failure to provide acceptable enclosures for previous polar bears in the institution’s care with detailed renderings of the specific architectural conditions which contributed to the animals’ misery, Colpitts’s draftsmanship explores the human-made conditions which failed these bears in productive ways. Importantly, Colpitts’s analysis of these enclosures as the unsuitable domiciles of the miserable captive polar bears Calgary observed within them is accomplished by observing the human observers of these bears. As if from an isometric view, builders, architects, designers, photographers, Calgarians, environmentalists, and zoo patrons are included in an analysis which explores the human history of a more-than-human failure. Unfortunately, most "dog parks" at multifamily communities miss this perspective with a one-size-fits-all mentality. The standard 15' x 30' spaces cater mainly to a few dogs inclined towards rough and tumble play (typically 18-months of age), leaving out the diverse needs of our furry companions. At Bark Landscape Architecture, we believe it's time to reimagine these spaces. Our vision extends beyond the norm. Why neglect anxious dogs who don't cope well in a crowded dog park situation?
