Part 1 "The network of transmission lines that carry electricity across the U.S. is old and not set up to meet the anticipated demand for clean energy sources like wind and solar. "Currently, electricity generation results in 32% of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States, mostly from burning fossil fuels like oil, coal, and natural gas. Those fuels are transported and burned where electricity is needed. "But inexpensive emissions-free sources of energy, like solar and wind, are only abundant in places where the sun shines or wind blows, and that’s not necessarily close to homes and businesses. Moreover, demand for electricity is going to rise as fossil fuels are gradually replaced for a whole host of other uses, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. "Keeping the lights on and the air clean will require a lot of new transmission." #electricgrid

If governments are at all serious about climate, we should not be installing any more gas distribution lines. None. But don't assume electricity will be the replacement. All new property developments should require fuel flexible, district energy (hot/cold water) lines. If natural gas is the lowest cost fuel in the near term because the public does not value carbon enough, then use natural gas for the heat supply for district energy. These systems can be easily fuel switched when the policies and market dynamics are right. Dramatically lower cost than replacing gas lines later on. Part of the problem here is that both sides of this debate are assuming the only alternative to natural gas is electricity. This is absolutely not the case. In urban areas, it is district energy that is the proven, reliable, affordable alternative to gas. Particularly in cold, northern climates. Let's not install infrastructure that will be stranded and make decarbonization so much harder.

The world has to add or replace 49.7 million miles of transmission lines by 2040 in order for countries to meet their climate goals and to achieve energy security priorities That amount is roughly equivalent to the total number of miles of electric grid that currently exists in the world

High temperatures are expected throughout the weekend, but the power grid is currently stable, and we are not expecting any energy supply shortfalls. Why would USA which is very rich in gas and has access to alternative sources of base load power talk about power crisis? Why can they not do the gas plus renewables scenario to power their nation? Is this a man made crisis that are brewing all over the world? Why would a nation stop using fossil fuels? Would the world not be creating an energy security issue while trying to stop the potential affects of climate change?
