If you're a founder sitting on a groundbreaking idea but stumped on how to move from ideation to commercialization, I have some keen insights to offer.
It's sometimes hard even to remember that I've already ridden the AI, ML and Connected Vehicles (M2M) wave once before. In the mid-'80s, I worked as a technology consultant at Strategic Analytics, a global in technology insights, and I was on the frontline of these then-emerging technologies. We had visions of what they could become, but the foundational, enabling technologies weren't there to carry them forward.
The limiting factor was the need for enabling technologies capable of delivering these concepts at scale. Whether it was processing speed, data storage, or real-time analytics, significant gaps needed to be filled for these technologies to reach their full potential.
Technology and fashion share a cyclical nature. AI and machine learning were concepts I was engaging with during my tenure at Strategic Analytics, I remember how they were heralded as game-changers of their time. Then machine-to-machine communications (M2M), add another layer of complexity and promise with visions of autonomous vehicles and smart cities. These technological advances make a splash, captivating imaginations, but ultimately receding as they waited for their enabling technologies to catch up.
Fast-forward to today, and we're at an exciting juncture where enabling technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, and real-time processing are catching up, setting the stage for a grand re-entrance of these once-emerging technologies. They've waited in the wings, much like fashion trends that cycle back into vogue and will now deliver their promise.
Maintaining an awareness of these tech cycles is invaluable. As they re-emerge, aligning business strategies and tactical plans to leverage these resurgent technologies effectively is crucial. The timing couldn't be better for innovators and founders to act. The stage is set, and the technologies are mature; all left is to execute strategically to optimize outcomes, boost revenue, and increase profitability.
