Clemson University  University of California, Davis, and Wichita State University were tapped by to research new #aerospace #maintenance techniques " including new #educationalcurricula, new standards and technologies, and other anticipated challenges associated with new types of #aircraft such as #drones, #airtaxis, or ultra-efficient #airliners." The university-led teams are for the first round of a new technical challenge pursuing innovative #aviationmaintenance practices. There is a lot of talk, for obvious reasons, about drones these days. To be expected, the surge in their use and utility is fueling all types of innovation. You can expect to see more and more applications of this type of technology, of particular interest to me are the very small, very large and very extreme environment applications. The smallest military drones fit easily into a human hand, larger drones are being tested for evacuating humans from battlefields and disaster zones and the largest are no longer called drones but now labeled vehicles. Perhaps the most extreme environment for any drone is the copter operating over 100 million miles away on Mars, NASA's Ingenuity. The atmosphere on Mars is so thin it requires this helicopters blades to spin more than 10 times faster than they would need to for the same amount of lift on Earth. The Ingenuity copter was built and planned to achieve 5 flights and operate for 30 days. More than two years later, it's still flying and sending back incredible images of the Mars surface. In part due to the great success along with the lessons learned from lander rovers such as Curiosity, future landers will be flying not crawling. Keep an eye on the Dragonfly mission for example, this mission is planned to be launched in June 2027 and will put a flying lander onto Titan, Saturn's largest moon (and a prime candidate for life).

This just in from Intuitive Machines, showing its unmanned #IM1 mission lander Odysseus at touchdown/impact last week, its crushable landing gear breaking but, by design, cushioning the landing enough to allow the spacecraft to settle into a 30-degree tilt on the surface. Apparently there is science to be gleaned from the way that plume of rocket-blasted regolith and rocks are being strewn there. And much will have been learned about agile spaceflight troubleshooting en route, after the primary lidar navigation system failed (an eye-safe laser safety system had not been disabled before flight) and frantic coding saw a secondary optical range-finding payload pressed into service to take over the job. #NASA #moonlanding (more in the comments >>>)

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration it looks like the tropical storms are doing what we want but the storms near the gulf of mexico are possible problems. i think the sugar cooled the ocean near the hemisoheres but makes the equator hotter causing wildfires and hotter weather and equator waters. if we could get some sattelites that could reflect the sun over the equator probably would need like 1000s of those type of sattelite drones! then we could like use the suns lightrays light as a reflection and turn the light into a more habitable light for our enviornment. basically like a reflector led flashlight drone that sources its light from the sun, then distributes it as a natural light with less UV rays!

This week, only four generations after the Wright brothers took flight, man-kind's first flying mission on another planet is officially complete. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Mars helicopter (Mars helicopter!), Ingenuity, was originally slated to make 5 flights over less than a mile of rocky Martian terrain as a scout for it's co-habitant, the Perseverance rover. For the first time that we know of, Mars had life on it - just in the form of two little robot explorers. If you've ever flown a drone, you know how fragile UAV flight is - one chipped rotor blade, one blip in communications, one unexpected ponytail and your mission's kaput. Add to that flying in 1% atmosphere on a frigid alien world two-hundred-million miles from home, and 5 flights suddenly seems optimistic. But seventy-two (72!) flights and ten Martian miles later, Ingenuity can rest easy as what I consider to be one of humanity's wildest accomplishments. Scot Campbell from Acubed by Airbus moderates a panel on scaling AAM operations with Karen Cate from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Nouri Ghazavi from Federal Aviation Administration, Eric Mueller from Joby Aviation, and Eric Corona from Wisk. The panel had a nice balance of Government and Industry representatives and the discussion represented the partnership between them.
