➡️ ISRO's PSLV to launch ESA's Proba-3 in September in 2024 ➡️ Proba-3 is the world’s first precision formation flying mission ➡️ Consists of 2 satellites (Coronagraph spacecraft & Occulter spacecraft) ➡️ The satellites will adopt a fixed configuration in space, 144 m apart while lined up with the Sun ➡️ Occulter satellite's main task is to block the Sun for the coronagraph instrument ➡️ Coronagraph satellite hosts the coronagraph instrument pointing directly towards the Sun ➡️ This will open up continuous views of the Sun's faint corona, or surrounding atmosphere, for scientific observation ➡️ The satellites will be launched together into a highly elliptical orbit (600 x 60530 km at around 59 degree inclination) in a stack configuration. The European Space Agency - ESA budget will increase this year by 10% to €7.8B ($8.5B), the agency detailed at its annual press briefing yesterday.   The largest funding buckets are #EO (30.5%), #navigation (13.5%), and #space transportation (13.3%). ESA plans to launch five imaging #satellites this year, including two Copernicus EO satellites. The 2024 budget is funded by ESA member states (64.5%), the EU (23.4%), third-party agreement income (10.5%), and EUMETSAT (1.5%). Diving deeper, the top nation contributors include: ✔ Germany: €1.17B ($1.3B) ✔ France: €1.05B ($1.15B) ✔ Italy: €881M ($965M) ✔ UK: €449M ($492M) CLOSER TO HOME: #Europe ’s space investment is still just a fraction of US dollars heading to NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which got $25.4B in fiscal 2023. "There is 'no guarantee' #France’s ArianeGroup will continue to be Europe’s rocket launch company of choice according to the head of the European Space Agency - ESA after ESA member states agreed to introduce more #competition to the market.. Ariane Group [has] since 2017 has lost its dominance of the commercial launch market to Elon #Musk’s SpaceX... As a result of the delays... Europe has had to use SpaceX to send some of its most important satellites into orbit... the ESA is determined to shake up the European commercial #space sector by emulating the approach of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Over the past two decades, the US space agency has shifted from buying #rockets from incumbents such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin Space's United Launch Alliance, to booking flight services."

The United Arab Emirates (#UAE) has unveiled plans for its Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt (EMA), scheduled to launch in March 2028. The mission aims to explore the main asteroid belt, studying the origin and evolution of water-rich asteroids. The EMA spacecraft, known as MBR Explorer, will weigh approximately 2,300 kilograms at launch and will carry sophisticated instruments from American and Italian partners. The mission is a crucial component of the UAE National Space Strategy, with a primary goal of creating sustainable employment opportunities for young Emiratis. EMA will embark on a journey to fly by six asteroids in the main asteroid belt before reaching a seventh asteroid in 2034. The spacecraft's design is reminiscent of #NASA's Lucy spacecraft, launched in 2021, with large circular solar panels for power generation. The mission will also utilise a Mars gravity assist in 2031 to facilitate its trajectory. Scientifically, EMA's main objective is to investigate the origin and evolution of water-rich asteroids. As a key partner, it will collaborate with various universities and organisations, including the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. This mission marks the UAE's continued dedication to space exploration following the success of the Emirates Mars Mission (#EMM), showcasing the country's growing capabilities and contributions to space science. Ariane 6 Maiden Flight Set for Mid-2024 Following Successful Test The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced that the highly anticipated inaugural flight of the Ariane 6 rocket is scheduled to take place between June 15 and July 31, 2024. This follows a successful long-firing engine test conducted in French Guiana last week, marking a significant milestone in the rocket's development. Originally slated for launch in 2020, the Ariane 6 has faced delays, but ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher expressed confidence, stating, "It shows that we are on the good track to flight access to space for Europe." The maiden flight will carry smaller satellites, including two from NASA, but as a test flight, it won't carry a major payload. Additional tests will be conducted to ensure the rocket's design is fault-tolerant. ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and Safran, is developing the Ariane 6 to compete with U.S. private launch provider SpaceX.
