A series of interview questions & answers in City & State “Ask the Experts” column. The following is one excerpt: “In addition to the disruptive demonstrations themselves, ensuing anxiety on the part of students, faculty, and administration is palpable leading, for instance, to Brooklyn College searching faculty cars for hidden contraband and even outsiders supposedly hidden in trunks! This type of extreme reaction, including cops clearing encampments with attendant college and criminal consequences, gives an added sense that campus leadership has lost its ethical and administrative moorings.” DAVID BLOOMFIELD Brooklyn College The Graduate Center, City University of New York Also excellent analysis by my esteemed colleague Prof. Celina Su By Sahalie Donaldson Holly Pretsky https://lnkd.in/eEu5GRBW

Demonstrations play a role on campuses such as The University of Texas at Austin. A university, after all, encourages students to discover and develop points of view, and to express them. These activities challenge the ways we think and feed a campus’ dynamic atmosphere. UT students have held more than a dozen peaceful protests, largely without incident, throughout this academic year. We also have a responsibility to keep the campus and its people safe, and to allow our teaching and research to continue. Our rules provide structure for this responsibility and set up conditions for the co-existence of protests, safety and education. We are constantly reviewing those rules, improving on them, and making sure they protect everyone — those who are protesting and those who are learning, working or visiting campus. These rules also protect free speech, and enforcing them uniformly and consistently keeps us from discriminating against any particular point of view. So it begins, the recriminations and finger pointing over how universities handled their campus demonstrations. Internal investigations have been launched amid election year politicians seeking to blame this group or that to score some points for their side. Looks--and smells--a lot like Uvalde, or Jan. 6, or any number of cities in 2020. What cops--no matter their uniform--must always understand is that when the s**t hits the fan, you'll be first in line to get covered in it. Which is why it is essential for police leaders (not managers) to prepare for that day. Training is essential, but training is not a solution for a leadership vacuum, whether it's in the LE agency or the entity it reports to. The time to know where you stand and, more importantly, where your overseers stand during such situations is best determined and understood by all before that fan starts spinning.

🚨 Urgent Concerns Rise as Campus Protests Intensify 🚨 Across the United States, university campuses including the University of Southern California and TU Austin are witnessing a surge in pro-Palestine demonstrations. A deeply concerning element of these protests is the marked increase in antisemitic sentiments, driving a complex and charged atmosphere that demands immediate attention. As tensions rise, public safety officers at USC have been compelled to dismantle protesters' tents, signaling a potential escalation in response measures. The critical question now looming is whether the involvement of the National Guard might become necessary if these situations continue to spiral. We must urgently address how universities can uphold safety and ensure that demonstrations do not cross into expressions of hate. It's a pivotal moment for action on how to effectively manage protest activities while sataunchly opposing antisemitism and maintaining public order. Many heads are likely to roll, on the failure to adequately address antisemitism on university campuses. #CampusSafety #Antisemitism #StudentProtests #USC #TUAustin #HigherEducation Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research. How to do and how to not do Crisis Management at University and College Campus protests. There is an article online about many Ivy League colleges seeking advice on how to handle the latest campus protests. And there is one about how not to handle one and gives an example of one Ivy League university. I regularly chat with part time employees at the bank, at the pharmacy, at the supermarket, at stores at the mall, and ask them what they are studying. Some years ago I told a number of them to take one or more courses in Crisis Management and Communications. Great skills to acquire I told them. Did any do so? No. Then along comes Covid, and people, companies, and hospitals suddenly have a crisis on their hands. How should one handle all these protests that are sweeping campuses across the U.S.? AI could probably give you good advice on that. I thought about it, this morning I woke up with that idea for content to post. And I found this one.
