“The Regents Exams had devolved or descended into months of test prep and rote learning, so it’s a welcome end to that era,” said DAVID BLOOMFIELD, a professor of education law and policy at Brooklyn College and The Graduate Center, City University of New York. “But what the new era portends is questionable and troubling. It’s not clear from the New York State Education Department’s presentation what New York high schools will look like in the future,” he continued. “Rigorous coursework needs to be required, and there’s nothing in this presentation that assures that will be the case.” By Cayla Bamberger New York Daily News https://lnkd.in/dGAxaPTD

I graduated college in 2008 and to say that education as whole, but particularly higher education, has drastically changed would be an understatement. And yet, the higher education law in our country is the same as it was 15 years ago. As Yolanda Watson Spiva, Ph.D., BCC , president of Complete College America, writes in this op-ed, "It’s critical that Congress put aside its most partisan convictions, find common ground, and reauthorize a law that can help more students get into, pay for and complete college, and earn the credentials that can improve their lives and increase the prosperity of the nation." Only 54% of Americans between 25 and 64 hold a college degree, certificate, or certification. A reauthorized HEA is critical to sustaining and increasing college completion rates. Read more:

🚨 "NYS dropping Regents as a requirement to graduate" 🚨 "New York making Regents exams voluntary" 🚨 "New York State plans to make Regents exams optional" 🚨 Have you heard the rumors too?! 👀 Everyone, remain calm! What NYSED has presented to the Board of Regents is a plan to phase out Regents exam requirements for graduation and offer additional pathways to demonstrate knowledge. However, this plan has a bunch of hoops to jump through before it's approved and we can officially consider the Regents exams graduation requirements fully extinct. ☠️ 🔥 OUR HOT TAKE 🔥 nothing is official and A LOT has yet to be decided. Upon further investigation, you'll find many of these article headlines are clickbait at this stage of the proposal. But with or without Regents exam requirements, we believe that students still need to know math for success in real-life, beyond the walls of the classroom. At Math Refresh, we work to create lifelong learners, not just good test-takers. 🤓 https://loom.ly/1J32LhM #mathrefresh #regentsexams #newyorkstate

Higher Ed reform is in the air. I argue for a more fundamental approach, where reformers go to the root of the problem by reconsidering what higher education was like before the rise and institutionalization of the progressive university in America in my latest from Liberty and Law. Let's peel back the onion freed from the corrupt and corrupting approaches in today's system. How does K-12 fit in with undergraduate and undergraduate with graduate studies? Why do we need General Education? Do we need PHDs in all fields? Where can we implement more testing and higher admission standards? What would we want a conservative or civilizational higher education system to look like? How much research university? Where liberal arts? Where workforce education? Let's think bigger. 1moDavid, yes I agree what is next for these kids to shoot for as far as getting ahead? I did receive a HS regent diploma back in the day when u had to study hard and meet all requirements. What do these students have to do to achieve honors? Sad.
