We visited the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History today in Washington, DC and it was just fabulous. We highly recommend it to all Linked In members visiting DC. Visitors are able to enter the museum until 4:00 p.m. Passes are released at 8:00 a.m., for time slots up to 30 days out. Same-day passes are released beginning at 8:15 a.m. They are free to reserve. It’s a little more complicated than needed (eg you have to enter your email twice) so leave some time for filling it out via your cell phone on site! All groups (schools, families, educational groups, etc.) larger than nine must use the group reservation link. Important Conditions: The Smithsonian’s timed pass reservation system is for visitors’ personal use only, and Smithsonian timed passes are valid only for the stated visitor(s), guest(s), date, and time. Passes may not be sold or transferred. Reservations that violate these conditions may be cancelled. Once inside you are going to absolutely love it! The presentations are on six floors so just pick one to get the most out of your visit. We picked Concourse 3 : the earliest period of African-American history but other floors cover cultural developments, including music and film so do a little planning! #nationalmuseumofafricanamericanhistory

MAATurities is a programme designed for adult and senior audiences, where contemporary themes are explored through artistic discourses featured in the museum's exhibition programme. By fostering open dialogue between different generations and life experiences, the theoretical (online) and theoretical-practical (in-person at the museum) sessions serve as forums for debating and questioning the world around us. We recognise that the languages of contemporary art can sometimes create barriers for the public, yet we also acknowledge that no other period in art history has required such active spectator participation. I've just been on a managing museums and archives collections course. ° It's was interesting to learn the difference in procedure's that museums and archives have in regards to accessing collections, but what was also interesting is how very much alike both museums and archives are in regards to accessioning our collections, the only real differences is the terms used, and how we aquire collection pieces. ° Another interesting and useful course by #Museumsdevelopmentyorkshire ° ° ° ° ° #museums #archives #collectionscare #collections #management

Always remember to incorporate physical actors / interpreters / guides (or whatever denomination you prefer) in your attractions / destinations / museums / visitor centres / hotels & restaurants / real estate promotions / fairs / cultural delegations / shopping centre or outlet events / embassy events / university student recruitment / university staff recruitment / international trade fairs etc etc etc. They will be your BEST SALES PEOPLE EVER as they sell the dream. If you have been mandated to undertake responsibility for one of the above, it would be difficult to justify doing otherwise in the current environment! From Las Vegas through luxury retail kilometre destinations to the creme de la creme of international universities, palaces and religious institutions, all are ramping up their interpretation staff portfolios in 2024. There is a reason for this! Every Euro / Dollar / Pound spent on these people results in an enormously higher return than what is spent on digital media. The impact made during some of the historic recreation events can be intergenerational and life-changing. Try replicating that with social media! Social media has a role but that role is extremely junior, subsidiary and complementary to real-world reenactment and interpretation. Visitors at all price points are DESPERATE for real-world non-digital interaction! When your investors or their consultants turn up at your attraction to check out what is going on on the ground, their ABSOLUTE NUMBER ONE priority is to check our real world visitor engagement, not digital engagement. Never lose sight of this!
