New article with Cathy A. R. Brant out now--available online and in print soon. Before Stonewall: Early LGBTQ+ Activism in Philadelphia, in Social Studies and the Young Learner. In this article, we present two curated text sets, each featuring a primary source analysis activity to engage upper elementary students in an examination of LGTBQ+ activism in Philadelphia between 1965 and 1969 as part of a larger unit on civil rights activism in the United States. Through engagement with the text sets shared in this article, students are encouraged to build understanding of LGBTQ+ history and make connections between organizers’ efforts and the work of Black civil rights advocates who inspired LGBTQ+ activists. Thus, teachers and students can learn not only about LGBTQ+ people and Black civil rights activists, but also directly from them through primary and secondary sources.

Dr. Terry O’Banion, with extensive experience in higher education leadership, analyzed the programs of five major community college conferences. His study evaluated the inclusion of key concepts like workforce, general education, DEI, LGBTQ issues, and AI, among others. The majority of young Black Americans believe that the state they live in is safe for LGBTQ people. However, 31% of young Black Americans believe that the state they live in is somewhat unsafe or very unsafe for LGBTQ people.

SJSU School of Information faculty, Dr. Michele Angeline V. and Dr. Darra Hofman, recently published a study about LGBTQ+ students’ library privacy in the COVID-19 pandemic. Per their study, "Utilizing a multi-method, multidisciplinary approach, we conducted a study to examine the information and privacy risks imposed upon or heightened for LGBTQ+ university students by COVID-19, with a focus on the roles of libraries and librarians." With burdens and hurdles in the way of academic success only increasing as states around the nation pass anti-LGBTQ legislation, a few Point Foundation Scholars rated what campuses can do to support LGBTQ students. The first priority students identified was to create policies that help secure the safety of LGBTQ people on campus, including anti-bullying policies. On #Juneteenth (June 19), a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, we are reminded that the work of equality, justice, freedom, inclusion, and belonging never stop. Black Queer people, who for too long have been historically overlooked and marginalized, have always played an integral role in fighting for and shaping the LGBTQ+ community. And they have done it in the face of adversities that other people have not, do not, and will not face. To this day, they continue to face unique challenges in and out of the workplace because of their intersecting identities. We must always remember that the LGBTQ+ community is not a monolith. The success of our larger movement requires gaining a better understanding of, and investing in solutions that mitigate or eradicate, these unique challenges. It requires that we raise up the voices who have done so much in the fight for equality. It requires we lead with inclusion and belonging.
