Huck Chair in Global Food Security at Penn State University and Director of USAID Innovation Lab on Current and Emerging Threats to Crops, Founder of PlantVillage & PlantVillage+

Had a busy day in DC yesterday. Was in town to discuss our work as part of our USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Current and Emerging Threats to Crops (CETC IL) with FAO, The World Bank and USAID as well as work by PlantVillage on nutrition with Aulo Gelli and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and work on climate change adaptation with USAID Some highlights With Jocelyn G. Brown Hall we discussed how we can better inform FAO about the enormous value that the US Land Grants (Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) ) and USAID Innovation Labs bring to increasing food security in hothouse world we are creating. Temperatures in DC reached 101F (38C) so the point is easier to make against this backdrop With Parmesh Shah and the Climate Team at The World Bank on how we can boldly bring 100 million farmers into the carbon markets. This was his question love that level of ambition. I firmly believe smallholder farmers can collectively create the largest carbon removal factory in the world and make good money doing it. Sell your maize (carbon) at the local market and carbon at the international market. Was excited to hear about a big project ongoing in Zambia now. This is so relevant to the private sector companies like Carboneers Biochar Life and Varhad Capital Pvt Ltd who are using PlantVillage to register credits via Carbon Standards International AG. I also spoke about this with Caitlin Corner-Dolloff who leads the critical actions around Aim4Climate Sprints which folks should check out and apply for https://lnkd.in/eivJJ99c Folks like Boomitra already have a sprint With Aulo Gelli on or use of AI to help track the nutritional content of school meals. That is such an amazing project. Learn more here https://lnkd.in/e599ZVmh Then finally to update Ann Vaughan, rob bertram and Jerry Glover on exciting work we are doing as part of CETC IL through the support of the American People Take home mesage Despite the heat I was a happy immigrant walking around our Nation's capital, enthusiastic about how different groups can come together and solve the grant challenges we face The quote I saw on the wall of National Grange perfectly sums it up “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.” That is the essence of PlantVillage and why working together we can succeed in feeding 10 billion people on a climate changed planet; and leveraging those farms to reverse climate change Onwards and upwards
