"True innovation in banking isn’t about flashy tech—it’s about genuine human connections. This is what I noticed from a recent read on Harvard Business Review about HSBC's strategy. If banks don’t prioritize customer needs because they want to… If they don’t listen to real-world feedback because they care… If they don’t strive to tailor their services to help customers succeed… Then, frankly, they’re missing the mark. It’s disheartening to see so many just ticking boxes and then... Boasting about "customer-centric innovations" shortly after. (It seems this is what gets the clicks nowadays) Spending time understanding HSBC’s approach, where they invest heavily in customer feedback mechanisms and real-time data analytics, has been an eye-opener. I find this case particularly inspirational and relevant for Banks across our Region - Banks becoming truly tech companies with "phygital" distribution In the case of DBS, its CEO, Piyush Gupta, set a simple yet powerful challenge: Act more like a technology start-up, and less like a bank. To achieve this, the top management sought inspiration not from other banks but from tech giants. This culminated in a clear vision: "Make banking joyful." The focus was on delighting customers by making banking effortless and becoming "invisible" in the process.

part 4 RESHAPING RETAIL BANK'S; ENHANCING BANKING FOR THE NEXT DIGITAL AGE However, The main challenge in designing the new architecture is deciding which components should be developed in-house to strengthen competitive differentiation and which elements of the infrastructure can and should be outsourced to reduce the cost and the risk of service interruptions attendant to updates and upgrades. In addition, the cloud services available today have reached a level of maturity and accessibility that affords banks diverse options (including in-house development and various partnership models) for meeting the requirements of a maximally automated, digital-first business. An agile operating model to respond to fast-changing markets Winning banks will develop speed as a core competitive advantage, and they can do this through two main avenues: an agile operating model and building the right mix of talent and skills. Banks must push ahead with their transition to an agile culture, removing barriers to cross-functional collaboration and creating semiautonomous teams that can deliver solutions quickly in alignment with enterprise strategy. Consistency in roles, communication, and work patterns across teams enables an organization to reallocate funding and form new teams quickly as new opportunities arise and priorities change. Sustaining this more dynamic operating model while adapting to a new, more digital environment will require a dramatic shift in skill profiles. For example, the primary role of branch professionals will shift from teller to universal banker, and with an agile tech organization, a bank may see its ratio of developers to tech operations and infrastructure specialists flip from 1:2 to 1.5:
