Received this photo from a mate. The Growing With Gratitude book has a home at the Jakarta International Airport. A cool yet, surreal kind of feeling to have it available to travellers internationally. I also wanted to share what I've found to be some benefits of having a book published. Here's a reflection: Builds Credibility: A published book lends credibility not only to GWG as an organisation but also to the programs we run. Educators, parents, and schools leaders are more likely to trust and adopt programs backed by someone who has demonstrated their expertise through writing. Wider Reach: A book allows us to extend our reach beyond the schools we directly work with. It can be used as a resource in classrooms, libraries, and homes, helping to spread valuable strategies for wellbeing to a broader audience. Sustainable Impact: Unlike workshops that are time-bound, a book is a lasting resource that individuals can refer back to whenever they need. This ensures that the positive impact of the wellbeing programs can be sustained over time, with the book serving as a continuous source of support and guidance. Networking Opportunities: Publishing a book opens up new networking opportunities with professionals in education and related fields. It can lead to invitations to speak at conferences, participate in panels, and collaborate on projects, further enhancing the impact of the wellbeing programs we run. Personal Fulfilment: Writing a book is not just a professional milestone; it's also a deeply personal achievement. I’m about to board my plane, so it’s the end of quite a busy week in Jakarta. It’s quite similar to Manila: Smog, dirty canals, and bumper to bumper traffic. That being said, there are a many positives our nations both share: a young population, a wealth of resources, functional democracy, and potential. Bags and bags of potential. Governing an island nation is hard; to ensure that people in the farthest reaches also feel the same economic growth and progress and the capital is tough. 250M people across 17,000 islands. Not an easy task. However, the various company visits we had, tell me there is hope. From waste recycling (Amandina Bumi Nusantara), to Social Enterpeise (Javara) and providing solutions to SMEs digitally (Bukalapak) show me that there is hope in the free market being able address some of society’s needs while making a profit. It’s good to always take practices from your peers, and I feel like a lot can be learned studying companies like the aforementioned three. People often learn better from the outside looking in, and even though I’m from a country that’s quite similar, what we learn is different because we’re outsiders and don’t take things for granted. Couple of key learnings: 1) Sustainablity sells both to investors and customers; this can be capitalized upon. 2) Geography is understated when talking about how easy it is to invest in a country; Archipelago’s have logistical challenges other countries do not 3) Rapid economic growth creates as whole set of headaches that need to be adrrsssed 4) Indonesian Food > Malaysian Food Overall quite a fulfilling trip, and am excited to head back to Manila for R&R. “Hi, I’m Josfirin Uding Anak Rangga, associate lecturer of Health, Safety, and Environment in the Department of Health Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, at Curtin Malaysia. “I grew up in a longhouse surrounded by nature's beauty where I developed a deep appreciation for the environment from a young age. However, large-scale agricultural activities impacted the area and changed the natural landscape. “In urban areas, rapid urbanisation and land use have led to air pollution, urban heat, and noise. Exposure to high noise levels can result in health problems such as hearing impairment, cardiovascular issues, hypertension, stress, anxiety, and mental health effects. Rising temperatures due to climate change can lead to discomfort, heat stress, heat stroke, and even chronic respiratory conditions, vector-borne diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. “These concerns inspired me to pursue a career in the field of Environmental and Occupational Health, focusing on the connection between environmental sustainability and human health. As an associate lecturer, I am able to channel my passion into action through learning, teaching, and research, such as exploring the impact of occupational hazards on worker health and the environment. Moreover, I have the opportunity to inspire students in this field, and be involved in community outreach programmes to raise awareness about protecting the environment. “Currently, I’m conducting a research project titled ‘Exposure to traffic-related air pollution, noise, and urban heat in a selected urban city in Malaysia’. The findings of this research project will contribute to Malaysia's urban planning and policy interventions. It also aims to inform evidence-based decision-making. Innovation transcends the dimension of space and time; materializing in any form, anywhere, at any given moment, and by anyone. The abundance of public sector innovations in Indonesia is comparable to a tsunami. To illustrate, the Ministry of Home Affairs documented 81,537 innovations from 2018-2022. Similarly, during this period, 9,273 innovations successfully underwent the Ministry of Administrative Reforms assessment. When considering the total number of proposals submitted, this figure rises to 14,939. Additionally, the significant contribution of the Innovation Laboratory programs initiated by NIPA further amplifies the innovation landscape. This is not to overlook the impact of change projects stemming from leadership trainings, contributing to a sense of experiencing an innovation surplus. If we look more closely, the sheer quantity of innovations doesn't necessarily equate to an even distribution across sectors. From my casual observations, four sectors or agencies i.e. health (including hospitals and health centre), education, licensing, and population and civil registration, appear to produce a considerable number of innovations. It seems that in certain sectors of business, there's less need for innovation, given the technical or routine nature of tasks. For instance, the public works sector might be commonly associated with infrastructure projects, but this assumption is misleading. An example from a city in the Kalimantan region illustrates how innovation can be implemented even in seemingly technical areas. The Department of Public Works and Buildings faced challenges monitoring illegal constructions due to limited supervisory staff. Yet, a simple and cost-effective innovation emerged by collaborating with students from local universities undergoing internships or community service (“kuliah kerja nyata”). These students were assigned the practical task of supervising buildings in the city, ensuring ongoing innovation as new students joined the initiative on a regular basis. Furthermore, from the perspective of actors or innovation actors, there is often the impression of depending on certain units (or certain people) to encourage innovation. In the regions, units that play the most role are Planning Agency (Bappeda), Research Agency (Balitbangda), or Organization Bureau, while other agencies assume that innovation is solely the responsibility of these units. Contrary to this, Presidential Regulation no. 38/2017 mandates that regional innovation should stem from all agencies and civil servants. That is why, one agency one innovation program faces challenges in implementation across various regions. However, West Sumatra Province stands out for its bold initiative, launching a program of 10 innovations for each. #innovation #changemanagement #publicservices

Another of my blunt talk in Jakarta. This time to 13 UK Education Organisations and an audience of local education providers from the Technical and Vocational sector. Organised by the British Embassy Jakarta . Key takeaways from my talk, were: a. #indonesia's population expected to hit 318 mill by 2045 would make it world's 10th largest #economy b. Young and aspirational population looking to better #education journeys for themselves. Timing is right for #investors in the education sector. I then gave them a quick Tik-tok insight into the education terrain. Strengths: Young population, Common voice to improve education standards, forward-looking #Government Weaknesses: #Affordablity & #Access, Misaligned Education Programs from industry expectations, TEACHERS. Opportunities: Vibrant K-12 sector, Adults upskilling, Foreign language interest (English and Mandarin) and PPPs Spoke about SIS Group of Schools and Inspirasi Schools expansion strategies on Indonesia and how we have worked with Deloitte Singapore to create a innovative Playbook to hire and train teachers (EFFECTOR model). And how this tool can help hire educators for adult upskilling in smaller cities. Finally shared our latest initiative - Inspirasi Colleges. These will will focus on evening up-skilling for working adults using our K-12 school infrastructure. Inspirasi Colleges will be looking to upskill ONLY in smaller cities where affordablity and accessibility are major issues. A great afternoon, all in all, despite a rushed atmosphere. Could have been better organised though.

Concluding United In Diversity’s twentieth year in 2023 gives us an occasion to pause and reflect on our journey (“Who is my Self and What is my Work?”)—as individuals, institutions, and a collective of social innovators and warriors of systemic change—especially in light of the current global, regional, national, and local reality. This reflective moment is especially timely considering that we as a global society are at the midpoint towards the 2030 global development goals. Closer to home, 2023 also ushers in the influential milestone that is Indonesia’s long-term national planning document that will guide future development policy across administrations. This invitation is the second of two “Co-initiating” steps—conversations convened by UID to reflect on its journey with the intention to celebrate our fellows, surface and connect the diversity of systems change initiatives, and invite our broader network partners to join in the journey as we unfold the next chapters. The first step took place in two online events on October 28th and 30th 2023, inviting UID fellows to check in and sense into each other’s work for a greater awareness and appreciation of the ongoing endeavors happening within the collective. How often do you visit urban parks? What activities do you engage in while there? What aspects of nature do you find most appealing in an urban park setting?
