I think the insurance industry is not unlike how the property industry used to be ten years ago. There is too much reliance on old skill sets and approaches. I have seen many roles advertised on LinkedIn and various sites stipulating that the applicant "must have extensive insurance experience." The obvious problem with that mindset is that you hire more of the same. The approach to delivering technology has to include all the caveats and experiences from a multitude of business backgrounds to move an organisation forward culturally, and hiring people who do not have that diverse background is shortsighted. It is not a new problem. I remember banks doing this with the retail/investment banking divide; I remember suppliers and vendors doing this with a lack of commercial acumen. I am sure there are many more examples that I do not know. Organisations need to change their hiring and perhaps be braver and wider in thought. It doesn't have to be risky; it needs to be more innovative.
