In a few short days I’ll disembark from the Icon of the Seas - currently in dry dock in Cadíz - for some much needed time at home with my family. After the holidays, I’ll return to the ship in Puerto Rico and sail with it for another five weeks while we finish work on Aqua Action. One lesson I’m taking away from the last seven weeks is that formal risk management training is absolutely essential for a safety supervisor on a show with such complex technical elements and choreography. The knowledge gained through my risk management training with the American Society of Safety Professionals is invaluable as we work to assess and mitigate risk in the complex system that is this Aqua Theater and the Aqua Action show. Anyone tasked with entertainment safety and risk management should acquire formal training. My journey in healthcare and safety has been a winding path, filled with unexpected twists and turns. I started out as a nurse, driven by a passion to care for others and make a difference in their lives. But as I worked on the front lines of healthcare, I realized that prevention was just as important as treatment. I became obsessed with the idea of preventing harm before it even happened. That's when I made the leap into safety, completing an internship that opened my eyes to the world of risk management and mitigation. It was like a whole new language, but I was determined to learn it. From there, I transitioned into a role as a hygiene supervisor, where I got to put my new skills to the test in a food manufacturing setting. As I continued to grow and learn, I realized that food safety was where my heart was. I pursued certifications and eventually became a food safety supervisor. And now, as an internal auditor in training , I get to use my nursing background, safety expertise, and food safety knowledge to ensure that our facilities are the safest they can be. He's at it again! Training and retention pro Patrick Yearout gives 15 strategies to retain employees when opportunities for growth and expansion aren't what was expected. Here are 15 strategies you could pursue to achieve that goal: 1. Cross-training – Cross-training employees in other roles is one of the easiest and most effective methods to help them continue gaining new skills. A restaurant cook could learn the ins-and-outs of the cashiering position, for example, or a front desk clerk at a hotel could lend a hand in housekeeping or events coordination. It may take a little scheduling juggling by the manager to allow for this type training, but it keeps staff members stimulated, exposes them to how other teams function, and prepares them to work in and/or manage different departments someday. 2. Job shadowing – Similar to cross-training, letting ambitious employees shadow managers will provide insight into their higher-level responsibilities. During a job shadow, employees could help supervisors write schedules, evaluate job applications, interview candidates, assist with inventory orders, and gain exposure to other essential duties. These opportunities will educate them on the challenges their managers face and, if they perform well, could certainly be delegated to their routines moving forward. Before attending Officer Candidate School in 2017, I had very little idea of what a Prevention officer does. However, once I learned of the incredible career opportunities both within the USCG and beyond, I opted to join the community. I've been a Marine Inspector the last six years, which is where nearly every Prevention career begins. Throughout those years, I've been asked many questions about what exactly it is we do. Here's a list of the top 5 such questions with a brief answer: 1) What do you do? We are responsible for ensuring commercial vessels meet regulatory compliance across a variety of safety, security, and environmental factors. This usually involves boots-on-deck inspections, but can sometimes involve auditing operational or administrative processes. 2) What kind of vessels do you inspect? Just about any commercial vessel engaging in some sort of commerce with the U.S. is subject to a USCG inspection, including (under different authority) foreign-flagged vessels. There are a few exceptions, but we inspect most tug boats, barges, passenger vessels, product carriers, and even some military cargo vessels. 3) What's the hardest thing about your job? The amount of reading/studying involved with becoming even minimally qualified is staggering. The regulations governing the maritime shipping industry are incredibly dense, and many scenarios are "first-time" or "one-off" experiences that are difficult to prepare for. 4) What do you enjoy most about inspections? The learning never ends, and despite the complexities, it's very interesting to learn how the many systems onboard a ship work in harmony. This is made possible by the crew onboard the vessels - so the people you meet are what make the job most enjoyable. 5) How did you get stationed in Europe? I consider myself lucky to have gotten this assignment, but the qualifications in highest demand for Activities Europe are Hull, Machinery, Dry Dock, and Foreign Passenger (Cruise Ship). I pursued getting as many of those qualifications as I could and had the fortune of an assignment year where 4 billets were open. How's the new job going Gary? Well!.. I write this as I travel home from having delivered a machinery safety and PUWER course on site in Glasgow for one of our clients this week. Really good group who all engaged which makes it so much easier and ultimately fun! I'm now 2 months into the role and it's been amazing. It's everything I was hoping it would be and more, and a job I didn't think it'd be doing for quite a few years.. if ever.. Going into the role, I'd felt a bit of imposter syndrome.. thinking I'd struggle but the company has allowed me to lean on my strengths and I've really enjoyed developing and delivering machinery safety courses which have been getting really good feedback. I suppose my message is that you shouldn't be afraid of taking that big step.. I almost backed out during the recruitment process because of nerves.. thinking it was beyond my capabilities.. even though by account my interview had gone well. You'll miss 100% of the shots you don't take.. I think that was Michael Jordan.. I feel as though I've developed so much in the past 2 months and I'm eyes forward to next year where I'm looking forward to delivering verification and monitoring of our clients sites and systems.. helping to develop actions plans to protect employees and achieving compliance... something I'm very passionate about and has always been one of my favourite tasks working in Safety.
