Today marks the start of the National Road Safety Week in Australia. The theme of the week is "All road safety is local – Drive So Others Survive", because road safety starts at a local level with every single road user whether in a car, on a bike or walking. National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH Group (Founder: National Road Safety Week)), partnering road safety organisations and Government. The week highlights the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it. 🚆 ZERO HARM | Keolis Downer Adelaide (KDA) acknowledges Rail Safety Week With consistently high numbers of near misses and serious incidents on the Adelaide Metropolitan Passenger Rail Network (AMPRN), KDA has contributed to the development of a public awareness campaign that highlights how a split second of carelessness in the rail corridor could change everything. An impactful reminder that ‘real life doesn’t rewind.’ For this year's Rail Safety Week campaign, KDA has worked alongside The Department for Infrastructure and Transport, South Australia Police, and Torrens Connect to produce bespoke material featuring near-miss footage from across the AMPRN, paired with important safety messages. These videos are available for viewing via QR codes displayed on campaign signage throughout the network, allowing community members to view the harrowing ‘near hit’ that occurred within meters of where they are standing. Monday marked the start of The United Nations Global Campaign for Road Safety, an important new initiative launched by the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt in partnership with JCDecaux. It follows a recent UN resolution calling on Member States and others to scale up efforts to implement the Global Plan of Action for Road Safety, with the goal of a 50% reduction in road injuries and fatalities by 2030. At Together for Safer Roads (TSR), we are proud to support and complement such global efforts through our own work, including the Global Fleet Safety Instruments Standardization initiative. From comprehensive driver training programs to integrating advanced safety systems, we are actively working to improve the safety of fleets and reduce injuries among Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). By working closely with fleets and local governments in the US and around the world, we aim to reduce road incidents and save lives. It’s time to dob in this reckless practice. These types of videos should be shown at truck (and bus) company driver inductions. TRUCKS DO NOT HAVE RIGHT OF WAY AT OPERATING ACTIVE LEVEL CROSSINGS. They aren’t static red, they aren’t amber to “sneak through” on. They are FLASHING RED to amplify the danger. First responders and investigators dread having to attend a crash of this nature. To the majority of truck users doing the right thing, thank you. To the minority that aren’t, you’re playing a dangerous roulette game. #railsafety #levelcrossings #truckingindustry #roadsafety

How public transit benefits everyone

I do wonder the need for a collective strategy combining all levels of government, below rail, and above rail operators to map out the total elimination of level crossings. I do see piecemeal approaches in some States but not a holistic longer term strategy. We should ask ourselves what does 2050 look like for level crossings. Is it a total elimination target? Look back 25 years and how much has changed?
