Satya Nadella released his annual letter.
The key driver of growth for Microsoft will be the Copilots.
Here are my observations.
NOTE: This is the view of an insider trying to be as neutral as possible. This view is from Miguel, not from Miguel at Microsoft.
1. Same recipe for the last 50 years
Why Microsoft is so successful? Sales + ecosystem + research transfer + product dev.
- Sales: Arguably Microsoft has the best tech sales force in the world. Part of my time in the company was in tech sales, and I don't think there is a better sales school.
- Ecosystem: Have you noticed that all products of Microsoft connect with each other? This is key.
- Research transfer: Very few companies can take the research and turn it into a product. Here's the trick, some of the top researchers at Microsoft are not in a research group but in a product group.
- Product dev: Over the last few years there has been a massive improvement in product development quality. See VSCode, Teams, PowerPoint, etc.
2. From a computer in every home to an AI agent in every home
If you think about it, this idea of having an AI agent in every product is just the logical continuation of the original goal Bill and Paul set 50 years ago.
They wanted to put a computer in every home. And they did.
As Satya defines in the title, Microsoft is again leading a new era to put a Copilot in every home.
3. It's not enough to create an AI, we need to create a responsible AI
The hype of thinking that AI will kill us all and that we need to stop AI development is simply silly.
However, we need to address the challenges that this technology produces.
All new technologies displace jobs. The electrical motor displaced the steam engine, Excel displaced the accountants who wanted to use pen and paper. There needs to be education programs to help people adapt.
Other challenges like privacy, security, and protection of fundamental rights need to be addressed.
Nowadays everybody is talking about responsible AI. The question is who should be responsible for creating that AI? The answer is the AI creators.
Everybody working in the AI field has the responsibility to create an AI that is safe, useful, and that empowers humanity.
