CCBHCs provide coordinated, comprehensive access to behavioral health services in accordance with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) criteria. According to Mount Nittany Health’s 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment, behavioral health was identified as the most pressing concern for residents and the top missing community resource. In the Emergency Department at Mount Nittany Medical Center, case managers work alongside providers and staff to ensure patients receive the most timely, equitable, patient-centered care possible. This team of 10 case managers cares for roughly 1,800 behavioral health patients each year, including approximately 225 children and adolescents, with the goal of improving access to screening, support, education, and treatment for individuals struggling with behavioral health problems. I think this presentation, particularly Enrico Castillos portion, should be manditory viewing for any housing organization but especially those that serve vulnerable populations. So many housing programs recreate punitive and re-traumatizing environments for their residents. I have seen this first hand from my work in Harm Reduction sites as well as other non-profit housing programs across the Greater Boston Area. There needs to be a structural shift away from the traditional (exploitative) landlord/property management model of housing, looking instead towards anti-carceral, housing first, and trauma informed models. Housing is a human right.
