Primitive Reflexes: A Controversial Topic! While there's no doubt about the existence of primitive reflexes, the debate swirls around their inhibition. Once a standard part of pediatric neurology exams, primitive reflex testing isn't as common today. Nevertheless, it plays a crucial role in evaluating child development. Mainstream pediatrics suggests these reflexes should vanish by the end of a child's first year. However, numerous studies suggest otherwise. Get ready for an insightful talk by Dr. Peter Rowe at our upcoming virtual event, the EDS ECHO Summit: Emergency Care, on March 16. Dr. Rowe is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He'll be talking about common Emergency Department presentations of fainting (syncope) and feeling like you're about to faint (presyncope), which can be issues for people with a type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD). Dr. Rowe will focus on a specific type of fainting called reflex syncope. He'll also touch on other serious reasons someone might suddenly pass out. Plus, he'll discuss how to help people in the emergency room, including discussions around fluids through an IV, and talk about other health problems people with EDS and HSD might face in the ER. It's going to be an informative session! Let's break down these terms and what they mean: Syncope: This is when someone faints or passes out suddenly. It happens because there's a temporary decrease in blood flow to the brain, which causes a brief loss of consciousness and muscle control. It's like your body hitting the reset button when something disrupts blood and oxygen flow to your brain. Presyncope: This is the feeling that you might faint or pass out, but you don't actually lose consciousness. It's like feeling woozy, lightheaded, or dizzy as if you're about to faint, but you manage to stay awake. It's sort of like your body's warning sign that you might faint if the condition causing it isn't addressed. Reflex syncope: This type of fainting is triggered by certain reflexes in your body. For example, when you stand up too quickly, your body might not adjust to the change in position fast enough, causing a sudden drop in blood pressure and making you faint.
