The Jenga Tower. New York City Can't image why they'd name it "Jenga Tower"... 😂. Even when using a perspective control (shift) lens, you generally need to straigthen an image slightly, as it's impossible to get it perfect looking at a small camera lcd screen. I use some fancy perspective control softwear to get an image as perfect as possible, yet this building was playing tricks on me. I aligned my verticals with the building on the right and to the bottom left; yet the Jenga building looked as if it were leaning to the right. I soon realised the left side is tapering toward the top, whilst the right side is perfectly straight. To be expected I guess as nobody builds a perfectly straight stack in Jenga! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 60-story Jenga Building is a residential tower located in the heart of Tribeca on 56 Leonard Street. After completion in 2017, it is officially the tallest building in all of Tribeca, the second priciest neighborhood in all of Manhattan, and an area better known for its fashionable industrial/warehouse-style loft spaces than residential towers. Hence, the Jenga Building and its unique stacked appearance stand out. Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, who designed the building, describe it as ‘houses stacked in the sky.’ Justin Davidson, Architecture Critic for New York Magazine, also describes it as “The most alluring addition to the downtown skyline in decades.” Moreover, Curbed calls it “One of NYC’s 10 most important buildings of the past decade.” If you’ve ever played Jenga, looking at this property might give you the impression that each floor is removable. But while the exterior can look deceivingly wobbly, the interior is pure luxury. 56 Leonard Street comprises 145 luxury condominiums ranging from 1,400 to 6,400 square feet. I spent a couple days in Miami recently, I noticed a stark contrast between its modern construction boom and the architectural diversity found in New York City. Miami, with its Beachfront views and Beautiful weather, is undeniably appealing (hence its rapid growth). However, it seemingly lacks the rich variety of buildings that embody individualism to the same extent as New York City. In NYC, the skyline tells a story through its architectural evolution. Art Deco masterpieces like the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building exude elegance and historical significance. Beaux-Arts structures, such as the New York Public Library, showcase grandiose designs and intricate detailing, reflecting an era of architectural opulence. Bauhaus-inspired buildings add modernist simplicity, while contemporary constructions like One World Trade Center reflect ongoing innovation. In contrast, Miami's recent growth over the last 20 years has brought a slew of sleek, modern condo projects. While Impressive and well appointed, many of these new constructions tend to be somewhat generic, contributing to a more homogeneous skyline that lacks the same distinctiveness and historical depth of NYC's architectural landscape. Although Miami is beautiful and vibrant, its architecture doesn’t seem to convey the same rich and varied story as that of New York City. ATTENTION is drawn once again to the old mid-century modern Googie style BIG TOP convenience stores, of which 16 were built across the Denver area during the 1950s and ’60s. A classic example of roadside “roofitecture,” the unique and satisfying catenary style roof of these buildings evoke a pagoda or yes, a circus tent - although it’s important to note that the name Big Top came AFTER the design of the building. Designed by daring architect Bill Sayre with a program of an “ultra modern design featuring widespread use of glass,” half of the buildings are still standing after all of these years - with one slated to go down in Burns-Brentwood on the outskirts of Harvey Park to make way for a new housing project. A little creativity could have gone a long way in figuring out a way to fit this building into the new project, but alas, creativity is in short supply these days . . . no wonder AI is aiming to take our livelihoods. With only 7 left to protect, these buildings are on Historic Denver, Inc.’s “50 Actions for 50 Places” list. Currently, (including the doomed Brentwood location) there are four of these buildings left in Denver, and one each in the suburbs of Arvada, Aurora, Applewood, and Lakewood - all of them currently serving some kind of purpose, from a church, to a tiny strip mall, to convenience stores, a Snarf's Sandwiches shop on 38th Avenue and Brockmeyer's Coffee Tavern on Mississippi Avenue in Lakewood (both of which were featured in this video)!
