No-one needs to attempt to displace NVidia - there are a lot of opportunities - none of which Graphcore was set up to satisfy. A lot of money was spent but it seems to have turned out to be another poor example of the UK being able to deliver significant RoI. “Graphcore failed to make use of its first mover advantage, with just $2.7 million in sales and a pre-tax loss of $205 million in 2022. The company’s main issue from our point of view is execution across multiple dimensions: yield was low, sales undermined by software maturity, and cloud initiatives very slow to win customers. The architecture was interesting, but Nvidia is a very hard competitor to displace. Ultimately, it could have worked out, but some bets fail.”
