Intense rainfall and flooding have devastated Texas residents, cities and coastlines for centuries. From The Great 1900’s Storm that left areas of Galveston leveled to the 2016 ‘Tax Day Floods’ which dropped approximately 240 billion gallons of rainwater on Houston in a 48-hour period, our region has experienced the overwhelming cataclysmic effects of these storms first-hand. On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast as a Category 4 storm. Upon collision, this massive storm’s rainbands stretched from South Padre Island, up to Houston, and reached as far inland as Austin. In the aftermath of this storm, a coalition of civic groups, business associations, and active citizens from the Texas Gulf Coast region came together to collectively address flood resiliency in our region. Known today as Houston Stronger, this organization originated through discussions with WHA’s Flood Control & Drainage Committee and Board Members. Houston Stronger is dedicated to working with local, state, and federal officials to increase funding for flood infrastructure improvements and utilizing public-private partnerships to implement a comprehensive regional flood control plan. With more rain expected during the upcoming holidays, there comes increased concern of potential flooding. Luckily, DWR prepares all year round by completing critical flood improvement projects to lower flood risk for California communities. One such project, DWR’s Lower Elkhorn Basin Levee Setback Project (LEBLS Project), has completed construction of seven miles of setback levee which border the Yolo and Sacramento Bypasses, near Natomas. This new levee is setback 1,500 feet from the previous levee and means the bypasses can hold more water when the Sacramento River rises during a storm. The LEBLS Project reduces the flood stage for the Sacramento River, which improves public safety for 780,000 people in Sacramento, West Sacramento, and Woodland. #California #Flood #Storms #PublicSafety

Is your HOA fully transparent, and are you aware of new flood disclosure laws? Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed crucial legislation impacting homeowners and associations across Florida. Sellers must now provide comprehensive flood disclosures, ensuring buyers make informed decisions. This law aims to reduce post-closing disputes and goes into effect on October 1st. House Bill 59 mandates HOAs to provide updated rules and covenants to all members, enhancing transparency and preventing misunderstandings. These can be distributed physically, digitally, or via HOA websites. Additionally, HOAs must adopt hurricane protection specifications in line with building codes, ensuring safety and uniformity in external structures. These changes aim to protect and inform Florida homeowners. #FloridaRealEstate #Homeowners #FloodDisclosure #HOA #HurricaneProtection
