#VC24 Quote of the day 👉 "During the yearly Ghent Festivities we transform an underground car parking to a bicycle parking. On one floor of this car parking we can provide safe parking space for 1.000 bicycles instead of 155 cars. To make this transformation happen the first and most important thing you need is political willingness and courage." - Laura Bodyn from the Cycling Embassy of Ghent 🤔 What are your thoughts on this? Last week, I had the chance to participate in Velocity #VC24. Dorothea Schaffner presented an outlook to our work in the #SESPIN project; I presented in a Masterclass on speed-pedelecs organized by Dagmar Köhler from Mobycon, together with Martina Lohmeier and Jan Pelckmans. FHNW's presentations were part of the ongoing #SESPIN project with Salzburg Research and WIVW. Velo-city, in contrast to more academic conferences, includes participants from cycling advocacy groups, ministries, provinces, cantons, municipalities, bike-sharing companies – and only the occasional academic researcher. The breadth of topics at the conference shows that to further promote cycling, it is: ✅ Necessary to have support at the highest levels: including cycling in long-term European infrastructural plans, national plans and regulations for bicycles on trains on an European level are just a few examples. ✅ Important to support bottom-up initiatives to gain backing for change and provide different messages to different target groups: there is no single solution. Where some might be attracted to the vision of a calm and quieter street, others could be convinced to cycling because it is more affordable than other modes of transport. ✅ Essential to measure the effect of policy measures, including assessments of network quality, counts, and subjective safety. High-tech and low-tech measuring is both a solution; prefer consistency over time instead of intensity when collecting data. ✅ Vital to recognize that in addition to cycling, other modes of sustainable transport serve different population groups and help create inclusive mobility. #Ghent offered an amazing backdrop to the conference, where cyclists can be found from all ages and abilities. The Ghent circulation plan was one of several examples that demonstrated what is possible with the vision and will to transform a city in just over a decade. Many thanks for all the exchanges Ben Abelshausen Julian Baker Ingrid Boelens Bart Dubelaar Laurent Dutheil Yvonne Ehrensberger April Marshke, MBA Michael Liebi Martin Loidl Nikolaas Van den Steen and many others.

Edge Lane Roads (ELRs), aka Advisory Lanes, are shared low speed/use streets for 2-way automobile, bicycle and other rolling modes. The narrow center lane is for motorists and cyclists have the right-of-way on the edge lanes, but motorists can use the edge lanes temporarily to wait for oncoming traffic, then pass cyclists back in the center lane when safe. ELRs have been used for over 50 years on Dutch streets to safely and effectively move multimodal traffic, while prioritizing bicycles, with very few accidents. The pavement marking posted speed on most all ELRs that I rode on was 30 kph (or 18mph). They are slowly starting to appear in the U.S. This is a mesh of three videos from a ride in Utrecht showing different variations of ELR lane widths, and gives you a good idea of how they function. Call it vision. Call it ambition. Call it leadership in action. This is what it looks like when a city commits to active travel: "Utrecht is on its way to becoming a world-class bicycle city. Cycling is healthy, cheap and good for the environment. Every day approximately 90,000 cyclists travel to their work or school." Thanks for sharing the link for this Jos Sluijsmans. Inspiring to see the outcome of action being taken to shape a mobility future which isn't car dependant Gemeente Utrecht #cycling #activetravel #PolicyShapesSociety #politicalleadership #transportplanning #transportinfrastructure #infrastructuredevelopment #infrastructureinvestment #futurecities #futuremobility #societalimpact #economicimpact #environmentalimpact #qualityoflife #livedexperiences https://lnkd.in/ewQtQs8y

As you can see from my video, the Netherlands is certainly not a car-free utopia. It also shows it’s totally possible to enable driving, active and public transport together. By providing genuine transport choices, it frees up space for the times when the car is actually the best tool for the job. The Netherlands’ transport system, in one of the most densely populated countries in the world, functions well because people don’t often use cars for short trips that can be safely walked or cycled. The would not be possible without infrastructure to make people feel safe. Dutch cycling infrastructure is designed to be safe for ages 8 to 80, improving independence and also avoiding traffic and congestion associated with short leisure trips or the school run. #cycling #walking #publictransport #transport #netherlands #roadsafety #mobility #sustainability

Here is more #bicyclenetwork footage around the #Odense #Denmark historic center. The “City of Cyclists” takes great pride in this charming network, and I found its use of varying paving patterns some of the most unique, visually attractive and enjoyable that I have ever ridden. In some areas, the different paving patterns delineate from bikes, pedestrians and train use, and in some areas the patterns blend right into the urban plazas. The cycle ways are usually slightly below the pedestrian realm. Yesterday me and Birgit Cannegieter - Couwenberg presented the results of our #Bicycle #Oriented #Development project (BOD) at the #POLIS23 #annualconference in Leuven. BOD aims to the optimise the synergy between new urban developments and cycling policies in cities. How can we ensure that new urban developments are conducive for cycling and have a high level of bicycle accessibility in line with the #15minC principles? To answer these questions, we developed the BOD concept and applied it to eight cities and regions in the Netherlands. Important findings are: 1. Bicycle accessibility and 15minC need a clear evaluation framework with clear policy ambitions (e.g relating to broad prosperity principles). 2. Calculating the current accessibility levels is relatively easy and mostly in line with expert knowledge ... for future scenarios this proved to be much more challenging. 3. There is still a lot to gain when it comes to the integration of urban development and cycling policies...even in the Dutch cycling culture! In this project we worked together with Nana Koolstra (#APPM) and Sven Reulen. Thanks for the great support and all the data analytics. Looking forward to the next steps, which amongst others includes the development of design principles for bicycle friendly neighbourhoods. #cycling #urbandevelopment #mobility

It's starting, just in time for spring! The Bike2Green project starts in a few days in the #Stockholm region, rewarding people for cycling. People can earn up to 550 kr per month and can then spend that in (mostly) bike shops around the city. Sign up for free here: https://lnkd.in/gqc8CrFw The idea is to support both people's transition to sustainable modes of transport and also the local economy. I've been talking quite a bit with the local bike shops these days and they need all the support they can get to overcome this weird economic period. And they will definitely be needed more and more as cycling will continue to grow. The EU funded project is a collaboration between KTH Royal Institute of Technology, European Cyclists' Federation, Pin Bike and Stockholms stad. More info here: https://ecf.com/bike2green Photo taken last spring in Stockholm. Spring around here means May, but who's counting...
