I get this question often: "Can I say the word 'Deaf?'" The word, Deaf, is not a bad word. It's our livelihood. It's our identity and our way of life. It's how we present ourselves. If you are already questioning whether it's safe to say "Deaf," I believe the question belongs to the person to whom you are referring. If it were up to me, I would prefer you refer to me as "Amanda." Generally speaking, Inclusivity begins at the heart of understanding and respect. Using appropriate and preferred terminology while addressing the deaf community is fundamental.
