We must address the unsustainable practices that plague mining industries to supply raw materials for car batteries and energy storage, from exploiting indigenous populations to deforestation. Only by working together can we find solutions that benefit both the environment and the people. TRC Companies, Inc. recently released its fifth annual State of Sustainable Fleets report, which delves into upcoming regulations, deisel vehicle sales, the growth of renewable natural gas, and more. “If I had to really sum up the report for this year, there's one word that comes to mind: growth,” Erik Neandross, president of GNA, said during a keynote speech at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo here in Las Vegas. “We cover all the major trends in the report, and these are the trends that we see in the headlines every single week.” The report also noted that EV popularity is growing outside of California, and that federal investments in hydrogen infrastructure worked to reduce the risk of private investment, making the fuel source more affordable. Big news in renewable aviation fuel! In January 2024, the first commercial facility for converting ethanol into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) opened in Soperton, Georgia, supported by DOE's Bioenergy Technology Office (BETO). Led by Dr. Mark Shmorhun, the Freedom Pines Fuel Facility will produce nine million gallons of SAF and one million gallons of renewable diesel in its first year, providing a boost to the local economy. This milestone supports the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge, aiming to produce three billion gallons of SAFs by 2030 and meet 100% of U.S. aviation fuel demand with SAFs by 2050. #RenewableAviationFuel #Sustainability #Bioenergy

When the environmental and safety issues in acquiring minerals for batteries (Lithium, Cobalt and Nickel) and in “recycling” the batteries after use are taken into account, then electric vehicles are much more detrimental to the environment than renewable fuels.

As the world shifts towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, the transportation sector is also undergoing significant changes. One promising alternative fuel gaining traction is renewable diesel. A new report from the Zemo Partnership titled ‘Vehicle life cycle GHG emissions study to show the role of renewable fuels in meeting net zero’ has provided evidence that renewable fuels can make a cost-effective, immediate, and significant contribution to meeting UK targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Report co-author and Zemo’s head of sustainability, Gloria Esposito, said: “Zemo’s study elegantly demonstrates the importance of life cycle GHG emission analysis in fairly comparing different powertrain technologies and renewable fuels against today’s fossil fuel counterparts. “Our work shows the significant contribution renewable fuels can continue to make towards reducing road transport GHG emissions. A new study from Zemo Partnership shows that renewable fuels offer the immediate potential to cut road transport emissions, and argues that transport policy should be more directly informed by vehicle life cycle GHG emissions data, and not focused solely on mitigating tailpipe emissions reports GREENFLEET UK. The analysis shows that a one-size-fits-all approach to road vehicle applications is unlikely to be the optimal solution to road transport decarbonisation, at least in the short to medium-term.
