After the success of my Dinner with Emily series, I started brainstorming about what kind of intellectual event I could personally host at Maxwell Social.
Last week, I launched my monthly discussion series called On Emily’s Mind, where I invite a small group of people to discuss a different topic that I’m curious about.
I debated between a few different formats for the event and levels of curation for the guest list. While I sent a few articles and podcasts around beforehand to level the playing field, I decided not to do a book or article club because I didn’t want to limit the discussion to only what was in the material. I also didn’t want to limit the discussion to those who were experts on the subject- I wanted to have more freedom for the invite list and hear opinions on each of the topics from people from a variety of industries.
For my first topic, I picked something that I think about deeply following my time studying political science and experience in procurement: why the federal government is so slow to make technological progress, both when it comes to things like modernizing software systems and deep tech innovation. We spent hours discussing state capacity, procurement reform, project management practices, DARPA, and more.
Thanks Nicholas Perez, Eddy Medina, Jessica Cole, Christopher Hale, Tarrek Shaban, David Litwak, and Andrew Tokar for joining me!
