As a physician, I'm passionate about making a real difference in our communities. As a Black woman, the way I learned to show my passion was through overworking. Exhaustion was the measure I used to evaluate if I was doing enough. Becoming a healthcare worker only exacerbated my propensity to measure my self-worth by my self-sacrifice. After 20 years of working as a clinician, researcher & professor, it is only now that I realize my vision of transforming healthcare spaces to become more just & equitable, requires me to transition from hard-working practitioner to strategic leader & mentor. This revelation has not only made me push myself but also the many BIPOC practice owners I'm blessed to mentor, who come because of their vision of not just working with patients but transforming populations. The deep work of the consulting I do is rejecting the revered persona of the struggling practice owner who is doing all the things without collaboration or a team because it is limiting our potential reach & impact in communities. In addition, they are also limiting the revenue that they can bring into their practice, which sabotages the sustainability of these desperately needed spaces led by motivated and mission-driven BIPOC clinicians. We must shift from pushing ourselves to the brink and instead partnering with those who are aligned, so we can do the work of creating health equity in a way that is purposeful (so we love doing it) but also profitable (so we can keep doing it). ________ Let me share with you an inspiring success story about a pulmonologist client of mine who had a profound desire to help asthmatics in her community. On her own, she resorted to community talks that were uncompensated, which left her exhausted because it didn't give her the financial bandwidth to reduce her hospital hours. W helped her pivot to increase her impact and income. Our team connected her with a financially stable asthma nonprofit, that had community health workers supporting asthmatics but lacked the capability to handle severe cases. With our strategic positioning, she was able to offer a contract that included mentorship of the community health workers and consultations for severe asthma cases. This symbiotic partnership allowed the organization to expand its client base and reach more kids Result? First, one 5-figure contract that required just 10 hours/month of her time for teaching. Now, her contract is multiple 6-figures a year to do this work she loves. The secret was showcasing the true value of her unique expertise and aligning it to help fuel the organization's growth & impact.
