Congratulations to our Superintendent Joe Gothard, Ed.D. for being named the 2024 Minnesota Superintendent of the Year by the Minnesota Association of School Administrators! Dr. Gothard was selected for this honor by a panel of representatives from a variety of Minnesota education organizations. Nominees are evaluated on how each candidate demonstrates leadership for learning, communication skills, professionalism, and community involvement. Dr. Gothard is a candidate among other state recipients for National Superintendent of the Year, to be announced during the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Conference on Education in February 2024. Does anyone remember the scene in Apollo 13 where they are testing and retesting the lunar module start up sequence to access more amps? This is what we need to do in education continuously, reexamine what we do, ask 'why do we do things this way?' and 'is there a better way?'. What would happen if lessons were shortened by 10 minutes to enable something else to happen for example?
It is long overdue. Recognizing that the curriculum is key and that not all children have the same motivations, interests, and skills is the beginning of getting it right for the future. I am sure that many will have come across children and young people who are seen to ‘need’ an alternative provision because they don’t fit the curriculum and examination pathways for the majority. Why should children have to go elsewhere? Why should some children be deprived from learning alongside their friends and peers because schools are not meeting their needs? Inclusion is about every child feeling they belong and that their needs and interests matter. We are so fortunate in Luton that many of our schools recognise this. They value inclusion and work to adapt and accommodate. A great quote from one of our Headteachers ‘School readiness is not about children being ready for school - but about the school being ready to meet the child’s needs.’
Annually observed on the Wednesday during American Education Week, National Education Support Professionals Day honors the contributions of school support employees. These support professionals provide invaluable services and are essential partners in a child’s education. The day honors a long list of professionals who keep schools running smoothly. They include all secretaries, classroom aides, cafeteria workers, maintenance workers, bus drivers, and the others who support educators, school leadership, and the students, too.
