The last big event marketing moment of 2023 saw an anthropomorphic Pop-Tart descending into an enormous toaster at a college football game and then popping out as a giant edible cake which the winning team promptly devoured.
It’s a surreal note to end a year on, but it worked! The stunt made waves across social media, scoring an estimated $12 million in media exposure.
Given the game sponsorship cost around $2 million, that’s quite the outcome.
As is often the case, the marketing lesson to learn from this campaign is: don’t be afraid to get weird.

🍪 Feastables (led by MrBeast) - Recently took the jersey patch for Charlotte Hornets.
🥃 Casamigos Tequila (led by George Clooney) - Sponsoring in-venue signage and dedicated space for multiple properties, including Philadelphia 76ers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and others.
🩳 SKIMS (led by Kim Kardashian) - Recently agreed to sponsor the National Basketball Association (NBA) as the *official underwear partner* of the league.

💡 My takeaway for individuals building careers in sports sponsorship: When seeking brand partners, it is now wise to broaden the search beyond large, legacy brands.
In addition, consider exploring brands with their own upside, audience, and lead ambassador/creator.
In addition to bringing capital to a relationship, these creator-led brands can also provide access to a unique audience, making the sponsorship relationship more of a *partnership* than a pure exchange of cash for placement.
I will be interested to follow how creator-led brands incorporate the teams which they sponsor into their own brand ecosystems, and how these sponsored teams experience a lift in fan engagement from the relationship.
